Workflows with Docker and Vagrant

Discussion of the Phoenix Project was really fantastic.  I was inspired to "re-read" (listen really) to The Goal.

After the discussion we there was a large group who gathered around the idea of workflows.  Paul Czarkowski is at EA and has been looking at Docker.  Docker is alot of things but it is getting a great deal of traction right now as Linux container engine.  Think of a VM but smaller with no startup time.  Paul is going to demonstrate some of his current thinking and use for Docker.

Others were interested in the more traditional Vagrant.  So, I will do a 20 minute demo on setting up Vagrant to develop cookbooks in the Berkshelf way.  The majority of the focus will be on Vagrant itself not Chef.

If there is anyone about who is using Vagrant or Docker with Puppet I would like to slot you in as well. Please contact me.

We should be done with presentations about 8:15 when I hope to move the discussion from the tools we are showing how they might be applied in the context of The Phoenix Project and our own various work environments.

Paul: First, thanks for the talk! You mentioned that Docker will eventually land on other distros besides Ubuntu. Any idea which one might come first? I know Ubuntu has the best LXC story, but I really have no idea how close any of the others are.

This was awesome. A bit too advanced for my level but great to get exposed to some of the things we can do with Docker.

Paul, could you post a link to your docker examples and the presentations? Thanks!

I appreciate the meetup allowing me to drop a recruiting pitch for my team at eBay. It was a room full of great minds and I appreciated the chance to be there for it. Thanks!

Nobody has offered. But we will still make some time if anyone would like to speak to Puppet with either Vagrant or Docker.

We've been working with vagrant + puppet + r10k some, but I don't think I would have something in a presentable state by Monday, but if you want to watch me fuddle through some code and babble incoherently about the philosophy and workflow we're using I would give it a shot. Otherwise I could get something ready for a short presentation next month? LMK

You say that like I will _not_ be babbling and stumbling :-) Your on Shaun. Plan for 15 to 20 minutes, and thank you!

I did some masterless puppet stuff quite some time ago in puppet, but I've pretty much forgotten it all.

Curious if there are any Vagrant/Docker + Puppet speakers to date. Puppet workflows are a bit more nebulous regarding temporal environments if youre not masterless.
