Colorado Bend State Park, a[masked]-acre facility, is located west of Lampasas in San Saba and Lampasas counties. The park site was purchased partly in 1984, with the balance acquired in 1987; the park was subsequently opened in 1987.

Activities: The park currently offers the outdoor enthusiast access to primitive camping, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, paddling, birding and wildlife viewing, and guided tours of caves and waterfalls. The park has 26 miles of multi-use trails (hiking and mountain biking) and 4 miles of trail designated as hiking only. When river levels are normal (call for current conditions) paddlers can travel upstream as well as down to explore or access the park by river. When Lake Buchanan is near normal levels, the river is navigable from the park's boat ramp all the way to the lake, approximately 10 miles. In this area the river is characterized by slow moving water through the beautiful canyon lands of the Colorado, hazards include frequent low water levels and seasonal flood debris.

Tours:

Gorman Cave closed by TPWD Exwcutive Order Number 10-005.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department closed Gorman Cave to public access on July 29th, 2010 in accordance with the Department's White Nose Syndrome Action Plan. Walking cave tours of Gorman Cave have been discontinued. The closure was initiated to protect the habitat of a large colony of cave myotis bats (Myotis velifer) in response to the threat of White Nose Syndrome reaching Texas.

Please note that "Primitive" at this park only means unimproved with no electricity but we will have water available. This is still car camping. I will be staying Friday and Saturday nights.  Plan on bringing your own food and anything you would like to share. If anyone would like to plan a group meal or picnic, please start a discussion here. Please bring fire wood.  There might be a burn bun.  I will send out a notice a few days before the trip.

CAMPSITE FEE: $5/person covers both nights, payable with your RSVP.

ENTRANCE FEE: $4/person per day, payable at the park office upon arrival.

SHOWERS/TOILETS: Waterless toilets are available.  Rinse-off Showers is available also.

KID FRIENDLY: Yes.  Please review the camping with kids policy.

DOG FRIENDLY: Yes. All pets must be kept under the owner's direct control and attached to a person or fixed object at all times by a leash not to exceed six feet in length, and shall not be left unattended or constitute a nuisance. Noisy, vicious, or dangerous animals are not permitted, as determined on site by park staff. Please read our policy on camping with dogs.

BOATING: Yes. The park features one boat ramp.

RV CAMPING: No.

OTHER RULES: Glass containers and fireworks are prohibited.

DIRECTIONS: The park is west of Lampasas, southeast of San Saba. From the intersection of US Highways 281 and 183 in Lampasas, take FM 580 west 24 miles to Bend and follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance. From San Saba, take US Highway 190 about 4 miles to FM 580 and follow the signs 13 miles to Bend; follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance (2 miles of dirt road). The headquarters and main camping are 6 miles past the entrance on the dirt road (unmarked County Road 442). (Access road subject to flooding.) Note: No Gasoline Service in Bend.

If you can add me manually, that would be great. I would like to RSVP for all 3 spots. Many thanks!

I just tried again, and it let me RSVP. However, when it went over to PayPal, I got a error message. Then, I tried again, and got a message saying the meetup is full.

Try refreshing your browser. It's letting me update my rsvp and revert it without any issue. If you still can't, I can add you manually and you will have to follow the paypal process for payment.

Statesman360. com has an interesting article about Co. Bend S.P. on Apr 7, talking about the running trails and biking opportunities. Despite the writer's inexplicable comparison to the Costa Rican jungle (?), it's a good description of what is and what will be at the park. Here's the link:

I'm thinking about coming for Saturday and Sunday night because I can't make it Friday and I have Monday off work.

We usually have a some hikes for the different levels of hikers. There should be some water so I assume there will be people swimming, kayaking and just sitting in the water.

Hey, I'm new here... was wondering if there will be group activities or are we all camping together and doing things on our own?

looking forward to meeting you and the other "happy campers", see you Friday the 27th of April. Doug T.

We will be camping at the walk-in sites .... hopefully 1, 3 or 4. They are really close to the water and have lots of extra room for tents.

  • Lisa

Are you going to be at one of the group camp sites?

    February 26, 2012

  • Sandy

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
