You may have heard about the horrible hit-and-run fatality on 9/4/08
on 183. Riding home from San Antonio in the early morning Eric Laufer
wearing all the protective gear was getting ready to exit north 183 at
Burnet Rd which was a short mile ahead of his Harley Sportster.
Approached from behind was a GMC Yukon SUV in excess of 80 miles per
hour. The Yukon struck the Harley and ejected young Eric Laufer who
was found dead at the scene. The Yukon continued north on 183 pushing
Eric's Harley for over a mile from the slow lane of impact to the fast
lane and back to the slow lane finally exiting at Burnet Road. The
Harley was pushed down the off ramp and up onto the curbed medium
where it came to rest. The Yukon continued to flee, and to date the
driver has not been found. The Yukon was found, but investigators
report that the vehicle was borrowed. The 19 year old male who was
driving has still not come forward.

I was traveling south on 183 at 7:30 a.m. when I heard that 183 was
closed down from 35. I did not know the details until a co-worker
asked me if I heard about the accident where the motorcycle was pushed
over a mile. That's when I got mad. I did not know Eric, but I was
still horrified! Immediately I thought about the personal side of
this nightmare. The impact to Eric's family economically and
mentally. I wanted to do something for them, Eric and everyone else
out there who rides.

I've been riding since 1972 and the thought of being hit from behind,
and having my bike pushed a mile makes my skin crawl. I had just
started riding more to work because inflated gas prices have been
killing me. Every day I see more and more people riding to work. I
know that there have been at least 4 people that ride just this year
who have been hit from behind and some of those have died. My feeling
is getting hit from behind is like getting shot in the back.

My want to help and make a difference uncovered that Eric Laufer was
the lead vocal for a local Austin group called the Two Timin Four.
Continued searching led me to the phone and email for the group. I
called and left message for Shane Kiel who is the stand up bass player
for the group. I told him that I wanted to increase the awareness of
motorcyclist particularly because I have seen more and more hit the
road due to the gas prices. Our idea was to tap into Austin's live
music scene and have an awareness/tribute to Eric ride/venue. Shane
has told me that the media will cover this event.

I contacted Central Texas Harley in Round Rock and they are donating a
bike for Eric's Father and Mother to ride the day of the event, which
by the way is 11/08/08. They are also posting the venue information
on their website once it comes back from the designers. The ride will
start from Central Texas Harley in Round Rock at 10:00 a.m. and end up
at the Nutty Brown Cafe where there will be 12 bands that will perform
throughout the day.

What's important is that this ride invitation is for anyone who rides
regardless of who makes the bike. This about paying tribute to Eric,
accepting donations for the family and increasing awareness for all of
us. Please join your fellow riders in the Ride for Life. We can all
help make our roads safer if we step up and do something about it.

Thanks,

Robert

My peeps, this is a time to try to create more awareness of bikers on the road, make a difference, and show some solidarity. Please make this ride if at all possible.

This was my first meetup and I got to the Harley Dealership just before we all left, so I didn't get a chance to meet anyone. I had a couple of friends show up, so I wasn't on my own. The ride was great. This was my first big group ride, and I was very comfortable with the group of riders around me. Everyone did a great job of following the rules. Since it was a mixed group, I didn't get to really meet a lot of folks from AMRG. I look forward to going out on some of the smaller group meetups, where I can have a chance to really get to know some of the other members. All in all, I had a great time, and it turned out to be a beautiful day.
