A.R.C home roof and dome build with Dave Pennington
The deposit to reserve a spot is $100 dollars and places will not be secured without this commitment. The total cost for the course will be $500.00.
In this 3 day intensive workshop 15 people will get the opportunity to learn how they can make a revolutionary new building material, and how to build and affordable roof or dome structure which is:
- Light weight
- Extremely durable
- Easy to build (compared to any other self-build method)
- Made from recycled and otherwise readily available.
In this workshop you will learn how to make a revolutionary new composite called EPIC. This composite, a lightweight fast-drying papercrete variant, is made from recycled EPS (Expanded Polystyrene commonly called "Styrofoam"), paper fiber, and portland cement. (EPIC = EPS & Paper Infused with Cement) Most of these materials are commonly FREE, and even if you had to buy all of them the cost of the building is WAY below any comparable structure. Depending on your labor costs, a high-performance shell or roof can be built for as little as $10 / sq ft (floor area).
Additionally you will see and learn the integrated technologies of monolithic domes and earthships at a real buildsite which is in progress constructing the first A.R.C Home.
Topics covered will include:
- Thermal/Solar Heating & Cooling
- Solar & Wind Electricity
- Contained Sewage Treatment
- Built with Natural & Recycled Materials
- Water Harvesting
- Food Production
You will learn how to build the roof or eco domes using the "airform" (balloon) method. The chief instructor (Dave Pennington) has built three different domes with the Monolithic Dome Institute, and their methods will be fully discussed. As well (Bob Brunson) has built an earthship with Earthship Biotechture and will be teaching thermal mass principles and off grid systems and how anyone can affordable build an off grid sustainable home.
For the full tuition of $500 you will receive three days of hands-on instruction for the following:
- How to make the EPIC composite material, including several formulas of various types
- How to pour molds using EPIC and craft the material during its curing phases
- How to create conventional wall types using EPIC
- How to beat the age old problem of 'cold joints' and make a structure as stable as if it was all one piece (wow!).
- Airform use and construction.
Handouts on mix designs and instructions will be provided.
Bring your digital mass storage device as you will also be provided will be 200 GB of digital media with instructional books and videos regarding earthships, aquaponics, permaculture as well as other information in the areas of sustainability with a combined value of at least $500 dollars alone given freely for your participation and continued learning.
Anyone who signs up for the Decemeber 7th class before December 1st gets a complimentary copy of plans and building steps for a earthship survival model as well as all earthship books and videos.

If you plan on staying on site the following will be needed -
Camping is available for everybody with a gravity-fed (unheated) shower area and separate male and female toilet areas.
Some things to bring as a camper include a tent, sleeping bag, a mattress and pillow, plenty of light and batteries for your tent and nighttime excursions to the bathroom, a camera, reusable water bottle, bug spray, swim trunks and towel, cooking supplies like a cooker, plates, cutlery etc, a cooler, toiletries and toilet paper, trash bags and camp chairs.
For the work site you will need to bring rubber gloves (for working with concrete), boots, hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
Old clothes or work clothes (this is cement work, don't wear anything you can't get messed up).
Sensible shoes (climbing ladders is likely if you want to learn that part of the process)
The deposit to reserve a spot is $100 dollars and places will not be secured without this commitment. Please be aware that the previous class on this technology filled up very fast and that was closer to Dallas than Austin! Comparable instructive courses can be prohibitively expensive reaching as much as $975 (Monolithic Institute) to $2000 (Earthship Biotechture).
The event will be held near Paige TX at an active build site. Exact directions will be sent only to paid participants.
