I taught myself from books/videos in Dec. 2009. So less than 2 years.
I am a big fan of silk, but that's in general as I haven't knit much with it yet. I'm still getting a feel for different fibers.
I like knitting, but cashmere on a tropical island sounds a bit severe. Hopefully it is colorful and plentiful enough to create a giant network of nets in the trees to be seen from a plane. Otherwise, I guess a tube top/dress would be practical.
I think I'll be doing it for a long time. I am a product knitter, really, and I knit because I like the ability to produce custom high-quality garments (although I do have fun making them, too). I have ceased to tired of pretty clothes, so I doubt that'll change. I have only never been interested in becoming a seamstress due to my incredible disappointment in commercially available fabric, which doesn't pose a problem in knitting with the availability of quality and interesting yarn.
I like to knit. I have an erratic work schedule, so a group with meetings different days of the week sounds super.
