A Grand Day Out for the Labs

I suggest some Sat. or Sun. at about 10:00AM) at either the Cedar Bark Park or Norwood Park. Both are very good/secure places to meetup or we could meet indoor in the Zoom Room though that would require a reservation

Norwood Park:1000 E Riverside Dr, Austin, TX

Cedar Bark Park: 2525 W New Hope Dr, Cedar Park, TX

As a side attraction, Munchkin-Lab will be there to show the other Labs how to fetch frisbees -- I claim he is only Lab in Austin that has the technique down properly (of course you are welcome to try to prove me wrong :) )

Click on the link above it will show a map. IMO, the easiest access from Riverside is to turn on Travis Height towards the river. Then turn right on, and follow the Edgecliff Terrace along the river towards I35 to the area. Parking becomes scarcer as you get closer I usually park at the first spot and walk a little further rather than try to get close. BowWowChow will be there I believe.

Norwood, I can't make it to Cedar Bark Park
There is much more shade at Norwood BTW.
I'll have all four of my guys/girls there.
Munchkin will bring his favorite Frisbees.

The Heliflight is perfect training Frisbee both for the thrower and the catcher. It flies well but can catch currents and be unpredictable which will teach the dog to keep his eye on it. Playing Frisbee is really quite a work out for Munchkin. It also teaches him to work cooperatively and not be possessive. It's one of the most fun things he and I do. His kind were bred to fetch and doing so makes them happy. Incidentally, in my main photo, Munchkin is the black lab under the table. Maya is the black Dane, Daisy is the Fawn Dane puppy and Frodo is white mix with the black eye. Daisy will let Munchkin retrieve the Frisbee but will take it from him just before he brings the Frisbee to me and then run away with it. I am pretty sure that it is an act of sibling rivalry. Any one that thinks that dogs don't think is actually the one that doesn't think.

LOL! Danes are "too cool" for that nonsense. I'm sure we'll be impressed with Munchkin's moves. Gonna check out the Heliflight.

I like the Chuckit! Heliflight alot, it's essentially a convex triangle making it very easy for the dog to pick up but still very easy to throw. I also like the Aerobees and particularly the LED light version. Its easy to throw, easy for the dog to see (especially in subdued light) and not too difficult for the dog to pick up. The flat Frisbee's are harder for the dog to pick up. Before they can catch mid-air they need to get used to just fetching the frisbee's. So make it easy in the beginning. I was pretty much kidding when I said that Munchkin is the best frisbee dogs in Austin, he is fairly good at it and can catch them mid-air occasionally but not consistently. That is mostly my fault not his. Any Lab will enjoy frisbee play if the Lab has the right owner. Danes on the other hand look at the frisbee as if to to say "if you wanted it, why did you throw it away?".

Tille (2-year old Lab) and I have just started frisbee and would love to get some tips. What kind of disc do you recommend? I just bought a yellow PetStages disc which she seems to like.

I can't make that date. I have a Golden Retriever Meet-up that day at 12:00 pm. How about the Saturday after that one. I would love to get together with other Labs.

I have been to the Cedar Bark Park and my three retrievers love it. I also belong to the Austin Golden Retriever Group and we have had at least two meet-ups there. The dogs love the pond. I can make any Saturday except Nov 3,2012- AGR meet-up. Are there any other owner interested in going to Cedar Bark Park?
