June 28 (Sun) - Texas Swedish Pioneer Association Meeting

=====================================================

The Texas Swedish Pioneer Association will meet June 28 at the Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock at 2:30 pm. This will be the 92nd annual meeting of this organization, which was begun in 1917 to observe the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first large group of 100 immigrants to Texas from Småland, Sweden, 142 years ago, in 1867. S. M. Swenson, the first Swede to arrive in Texas in 1838 is also honored. He was responsible for bringing so many Swedish people to Texas. Both countries benefited from his efforts - Texas needed people to live on and farm the land; Sweden was overpopulated and was having crop failures. Swenson paid the passage of his former neighbors and family to come; then, they worked for a year or so on Swenson farm/ranch land to repay their debt. Many of our ancestors arrived here in Texas in this manner. We have so much of which to be proud of these courageous people who are mainly responsible for our being proud Texans.

The meeting starts with an organ music by Dr. Ellsworth Peterson; then, we will have a program of music and history followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. Jean Sellstrom, says, “Please come. Välkommen Alla!!”

Some couple dance experience is helpful and we welcome the opportunity to share these dances with anyone who comes regularly and wants to participate. Remember to wear slick-soled shoes to make turning easier. You do not need to bring a partner, as we share partners throughout the evening.

Ongoing – Floorball

==================

From Jeff Morris: We have a floorball club in Austin that I’m trying to promote. I know floorball is popular in Scandinavia, if it’s possible to list our club in your newsletter or website I’d appreciate it. Here are the details:

Austin Floorball Club - Floorball is a fast paced team sport that is simply described as a safe version of floor hockey. It is played indoors on foot using lightweight plastic sticks and a whiffle ball. The rules are easy to learn and there is no physical contact. It's a great coed game and it's very addictive. A basic floorball stick is provided; all you need to bring is a pair of sneakers. Info at www.austinfloorball.com , or email Jeff Morris at austin_floorball@yahoo.com
