PPA Update

From: Andy Z.

Greetings, Pilots!  This is a quick update on various PPA interests...

From the General Meeting held July 19, a pilot asked why we couldn't pick up a "squawk" code through Dutchess Ground anymore.  Essentially, if you wanted to initiate VFR Flight Following, you could do this by asking Ground Control for a VFR Code, or Flight Following, and they would arrange Flight Following for you with Approach Control before you took off.  You would get a transponder code and a departure frequency.

I asked the Tower Manager, Mike Wold about this.  NY TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) used to allow POU Tower to issue VFR Flight Following squawk codes per a "LOA," or Letter of Agreement.  Several weeks ago, NY TRACON revoked this LOA, which is why Dutchess Ground can no longer coordinate VFR Flight Following out of KPOU.  If you still want Flight Following, you will just have to request it after departing POU and asking NY Approach on 132.75.  This change does not affect our ability to receive IFR clearances on the ground at POU.

Since most airport towers have this LOA in place with their neighboring TRACON, you should still be able to request VFR Flight Following while on the ground at most other airports.  If you're really diehard about getting a VFR code on the ground, it never hurts to try.

The PPA BBQ and Show & Tell is this Saturday on the Alpha Ramp- meet us at the Yellow Building!  Pilots are flying in from as far away as Farmingdale, so bring your friends and family and hang out with us!  PLEASE RSVP so we know to bring enough food for you!  ($10 donation requested)

It looks like there might be another event at POU this year- tenatively, October 20th is being set up as a Wheels & Wings at KPOU!  Many on- and off-field organizations will participate, and one organization is even sponsoring a Spot Landing Contest!  More at the next PPA General Meeting!
