"Lightning in the Desert" 2014 at Luke AFB

Well, now that the congressional budget extortion has faded, Luke AFB is finally having their long-awaited Open House & Air Show! I'll be there early around 0800T, parked by the flight line w/ a big cooler in easy reach (after a stop at the Class 6 store)! This year's festivities are dedicated to Luke's new F-35A Lightning II Multi-role weapons platform - perhaps the last American manned fighter(?).

See general & parking info here:

The event runs all weekend. SUN is a good day to attend, too, since a lot of the static display a/c take off soon after the show ends. You can witness their departures if you have normal on-base privileges or if you park off-base near the active runway. One night, there might be a reception for the T-Birds, but last time there wasn't such a party.

Give me a call if you wanna' tailhook up on SAT.

And sleep well tonight... Your Air Force is awake at Reverse Happy Hour!

Getting there Saturday was a disaster. I litterally gave up after 2.5 hours in my car and went back home after getting to the Glendale parking lot and then finding out it was $10 to park but I only had a $5 bill. I was so mad steam was probably coming from my ears.
I tried again Sunday and made it from my house to the parking lot in 20 min this time with the $10. Had a great time and took about 600 photos :-)

Well, Comrades, this may have the best air show ever! Sure, there were many of the same old demos and static displays, but a flying P-38? And two F-86s doing formation aerobatics? And a close-up of the new AC-130 Stinger II? And the Osprey? And the MQ-1? AND THE F-35? WOW! No T-Bird Reception SAT nite (in fact, the clubs were closed) & it took me A LONG TIME to get off base, but... I parked my KF-250 right by the flight line w/ a cooler full of snacks & "beverages" to refuel myself all day! And I spent virtually all day not watching the aerials, but BS'ing with the A/C's, crews, and maintenance folks. What a great & memorable day! The D-M Air Show is 12-13 APR,[masked] in SE Tucson!
