Square Top Mountain

Let's start the summer with a 13er!!  Square Top Mountain, is 6.5 miles roundtrip with 2400 feet of elevation gain.  From the top of Guanella Pass, find the trailhead near the restrooms in the upper parking lot (on the west side of the road). Do not follow the crowds, most people will be heading towards Mt. Bierstadt (on the east side of the road). Shortly after starting, a sign will point toward Square Top Mtn and Square Top Lake. Hike through the well marked trail over several wooden bridges. Mt. Bierstadt and Mt. Evans will be visible behind us for most of the trail. At the fork in the trail, there is a sign directing to continue straight to Square Top Lakes. Although not self-evident, take a left at this fork. Do not go towards Square Top Lakes. Continue hiking south following cairns and trail signs. Soon we'lll reach a sign directing us to take a right for Square Top Mountain.

From here on, there is no trail. We'll work our way up the ridge through the tundra. The terrain is easy all the way to the top, but don’t be fooled by false summits. The summit itself is very large, so be sure to take in the views from all angles. The entire trail is without trees which allows you 360 degree views the entire hike.  It could become windy, so come prepared. The trail is well traveled and it is best to hike early before the afternoon storms roll in.

Direction to Trailhead: I-70 West to Georgetown, Exit 228.  Turn left at the exit (15th Street) and pass the Visitor's Center, turn right on Argentine Street.  Follow into town and turn left on main street (11th Street).  Follow main street through town and you will see a sign on the right pointing to Guanella Pass - this should be Rose Street, turn right and follow up to Guanella Pass Road.  It's about 5 miles to the pass and the trailhead.

Carpooling: Meet at Woolly Mammoth, Section CC, across from the Conoco Station and we'll form some carpools. Plan to leave the lot by 6:45am. The parking lot is located at the I-70 & Morrison Exit 259.

Optional Lunch after the hike at Tommyknockers located at 1123 Miners Street in Idaho Springs, Phone[masked]-2688.

See you there!

I'm carpooling with Nancy from Boulder and we misread my own carpool time. So its likely we'll be late to wooly.

On Google Earth 5 miles up Guanella Pass Road from the intersection of Rose and Guanella Pass Rd. in Georgetown is a parking area next to Lower Cabin Creek Reservoir. Is this the trailhead?

Refining the mileage - Mapquest shows 10.76 miles from downtown Georgetown.

And whoever is only hiking to the lakes should probably try to carpool together. See you at Wooly Mammoth. I need a ride too and I'm undecided!

Possibly me too. I'm supposed to have a closing later that day, and I'm afraid I don't have time to do the whole thing. Still uncertain.
