Paddle and Picnic at Gross Reservoir

Bring your kayak, canoe or other cartop boat, PFD and paddles and enjoy a day on the water! Only non-motorized boats are permitted.

Note:  There are no rentals available at the reservoir, but REI, Confluence Kayaks and Sports Rent all rent lake kayaks.

You need your own kayak and know how to handle it in the water to participate in this event. This is not a "learning" event.

Gross Reservoir is a fantastic high mountain lake. The reservoir lies in the foothills above Boulder, Colorado on the South Boulder Creek Drainage and stands 340 feet above the South Boulder Creek streambed.  Gross Reservoir has a surface area of 440 acres and 10.9 miles of shoreline.  Gross Reservoir is free to the public.

Where to Meet: Meet at the Osprey Boat Launch at 9am.  Weather changes early and fast at the reservoir, so that's why we meet so early.

Parking: There is limited parking at the Osprey Boat Launch, so the earlier you arrive, the better.  Drive close in to unload your kayak and then find a spot in the parking lot.

Picnic: We will picnic on the shores of Gross Reservoir.  We'll paddle to the dam and on the way back find a sunny cove or spot along the shore to eat our lunch.  Bring a little something to share along with your own food and drink.

Directions: Gross Reservoir lies in the foothills above Boulder Colorado. From Denver, take Hwy 93 north from Golden to Hwy. 72 West, Coal Creek Canyon, climb 7 miles to Crescent Park Rd. turn right then 1 mile to Gross Dam Road, turn right at the T and follow the dirt road to Osprey Boat Launch Site (from Denver, when you get to the reservoir entrance, turn left to Osprey - right will take you to Boulder).

From Boulder take Baseline Rd. to Flagstaff Rd., continue climbing for 9 miles to Gross Dam Rd. on left, follow signs to South Side and Osprey Boat Launch Site. The left turn onto Gross Dam Rd. is just before Flagstaff Rd. goes from paved to dirt.  I hear this route is curvy and bumpy (but it can't be any bumpier than the other route).

Important Note:  This is a participate at your own risk event!

Wonderful weather group and event. I probably would not have bought a kayak without the Boomer water events of the last year.
Glad I did. Taking it to Taylor Park next week

Thanks Perry for bringing your extra kayak for Dave to use!

Look forward to paddling with all of you tomorrow. Just a reminder, you need your own water craft, PFD, whistle and ID on your boat. Participate at your own risk! Bring a lunch and something small to share. The plan is to paddle to the dam and explore coves on the way back. We'll find a good place for lunch along the shore. I also plan to paddle to the inlet. Its going to be fun!

Is there a time schedule for the afternoon when we are planning to be off the water?

    June 9, 2013

    • Debbie

No time schedule - just whenever we get tired of paddling, finish lunch on the shore or the afternoon storms push us off the water.

I may be late ....or I may have to leave early ...b/c I need to meet with a contractor at my house, and I don't know what time that will be. Either way, I'll see you there sometime or another! (I'm assuming that we'll be in the same spot we were last year, so if everyone's already out on the water, I may be waiting for you upon your return.)

You're really missing the best kayaking reservoir fairly close to Denver! Maybe we'll get another chance before the summer is over.

Does anyone have an extra kayak I can borrow?

    May 22, 2013

    • Perry M.

Hi Annette, I have an extra kayak

      May 30, 2013

    • Perry M.

Do you have a vehicle that will carry two kayaks?

      May 30, 2013

  • Buzz

I have no way to get my kayak there, my sports car won't carry it. I live in Longmont if someone can swing up this way and carry my boat on their roof or in their pick-up truck, I could go.

Wish I could be there! Don't think kayaking on a really nice reservoir is enough for a day off - have fun!
