A short and shady hike on 4th of July morning! The Beaver Brook and Chavez Trails are close to the metro area, but have a back country feel. A short, but steep trail winds through a thick forest along a brook and when the trees open up, you get a beautiful view.
The loop is around 5 miles roundtrip with about 1000 ft elevation gain. The trail starts off downhill then can be steep and rocky so microspikes and poles might be helpful for some.
We will hike the Braille Nature Trail to Beaver Brook Trail and loop back on the Chavez Trail. The Beaver Brook trail is well marked with signs on trees that say "B/B" and there are mile markers every half mile.
Directions: Take I-70 West to the Chief Hosa Exit #253 to the Genesee Park lot (also the east entrance to the Beaver Brook trail). Turn north at the off ramp stop sign, then right onto Stapleton Drive. Stapleton drive is a dirt road which you take for less than 1 mile to the parking lot which is easy to spot on the left side of the street.
Carpooling: Meet at Wooly Mammoth, Section CC where we'll form some carpools and leave the parking lot at 7:30am. The parking lot is located on I-70 West, Exit 259, turn right then left on US 40 West. Drive up the hill to Section CC, across from the Conoco.
Optional refreshment after the hike at a nearby restaurant.
