This an easy to moderate about 3 mile roundtrip hike with a short but steady climb to the summit - around 900 feet of elevation gain. The Chief Mountain trail starts in spruce/pine forest and crosses Old Squaw Pass Road after approximately 0.2 miles. While the trail head sign here reads 2 miles to the top of Chief Mountain, it is in reality a shorter distance. The trail continues upward and soon reaches treeline where it opens up into alpine tundra. Be prepared to enjoy beautiful views from here on up. Enjoy the panoramic views of Denver and the plains to the east, Pikes Peak to the south, Mount Meeker to the north, and Mount Evans and Mount Bierstadt to the west.
FYI - Chief Mountain is Colorado's 1,452nd highest peak at 11,709 feet tall located in the Arapaho National Forest.
Directions to Trail: From Denver take I-70 west. Exit Evergreen Pkwy (exit #252). Go about 3 miles to Squaw Pass Road (Hwy 103). Go right on Squaw Pass for 12 miles to Echo Mountain Skill Resort. Look for parking area on right side of the road near mile marker 18. The lot is just past the ski area. The trailhead is on the opposite side of the road (south side).
Carpooling: Meet at Wooly Mammoth, Section CC where we'll form some carpools. Plan to leave the parking lot at 7:15am. The lot is located on I-70 West, Exit 259
