Join Diana for a long weekend trip to Mesa Verde National Park! The plan is to meet for carpooling at 9am Friday at the Wooly Mammoth Park n Ride and get into Cortez around 4pm. It's a 7 hour drive and we will leave the parking lot promptly at 9am, so please be on time and ready to go!
Here's the plan...
Friday Late Afternoon - Check into the motel then drive into Mesa Verde ($15 per car). Friday 7pm attend a free lecture at Far Point Lodge about Navajo farming. Afterwards there is a fire pit ranger series about mountain lions at 9-ish (if we're not too tired).
Saturday - Visit Weatherill Mesa, Step house, and tour Long house ($3). There is an evening program there called Twilight in the Palace at 7pm ($10). Bring food and drink for a picnic in the park.
Sunday - Let's see what else we can fit into the schedule before we leave. Bring food and drink for a picnic in the park. Head home around noon, 1pm at the latest.
Directions: Mesa Verde National Park is in Southwestern Colorado. We will be driving US285 to CO112 then picking up US160. Learn more about the park http://www.nps.gov/meve/index.htm
Where to Meet the Group: Everyone seems to be driving their own cars, so we'll meet in Cortez. Email Diana if you have questions.
Lodging in Cortez: Call[masked] or[masked] and make your reservation at the Cortez Super 8 http://www.super8.com/hotels/colorado/cortez/super-8-cortez-mesa-verde-area/hotel-overview Cost is around $78/night + tax, $70 if you have AAA. Check-in time is 3pm, check-out is 11am.
Food: There's a City Market across the street from the motel where we can buy picnic fixin's for lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Not sure what food is available in the park and we won't be doing long lunch stops at restaurants as they cut into the day!
What to Bring: A day pack for exploring Mesa Verde including water bottle/camel back and snacks/food. Appropriate clothing and gear.
See you there!
