Cheesman Canyon Gill Trail

  • This location is shown only to members

Let's hike the Cheesman Canyon Gill Trail - a moderate to difficult trail with many steep ups and downs for around 7+ miles. The trail is named for Tom Gill who had a sawmill at location of the present trailhead from 1904 to 1907. He also constructed the road from there to Deckers. Cheesman Dam, at the end of the trail, was constructed as a water supply reservoir for the city of Denver and was completed in 1905. The trail is used primarily by anglers wishing to fish the 3 mile Cheesman Canyon between the Wigwam Club and Cheesman Dam. Anglers will find Brown and Rainbow trout. Special catch and release rules are in effect for this area.

We can take the upper trail or the lower 3.5 mile trail that follows along the west shoreline of the South Fork of the South Platte River. Again, the trail is difficult and steep in many sections so bring your micro spikes and poles for slippery conditions on the trail.

Directions: Drive west on Highway 285 to Pine Junction. Turn south on to Jefferson County Road 126 and travel 21 miles from Pine Junction to reach the Cheesman Canyon trailhead. The road is paved the entire way.

Carpooling: Meet at 7:45am at the Fort restaurant located at US285 and Hiway 8 Exit(19192 Highway 8 Morrison). We'll form some carpools here.

Optional Refreshment after the hike at Zokas located at 16040 Pine Valley Road in Pine.

It's quite obvious that Debbie has a strong connection with God because she always takes us where he has left his palm print.

Beautiful sunny and warm day on a bone dry trail. Still didn't make it to the dam cus trail washed out in spots making it very steep and slippery with loose rock. Gorgeous views of the South Platte and awesome rock formations.

NOTE - hike starts at 9am at the trailhead. That means carpoolers needs to meet earlier. So let's meet at the Fort by 7:45am to reach the trailhead by 9am. Sorry for the confusion!

I love this trail! If anyone is coming from East or Central Denver, maybe we can carpool from town to the Fort.
