Lost Lake is accessible from the Hessie Trailhead in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. This easy 5.4 mile roundtrip hike is highlighted by aspen groves, wildflowers, streams, waterfalls, and a dramatic alpine backdrop. The trail begins on a steep dirt road lined with aspens and hopefully some wildflowers. We will pass a waterfall before reaching the lake and walking around on the shoreline.
What to Bring: I haven't been on the trail this season, so I don't know the conditions of the trail. Always be prepared with rain gear, traction, poles, extra layers of clothing for Colorado's changing weather, plenty of water and snacks.
Directions to Trailhead: Lost Lake is accessed from the Hessie Trailhead just outside the southeast boundary of the Indian Peaks Wilderness near Nederland, CO. Take U.S.36 or Highway 93 into Boulder to Canyon Blvd. Follow the Boulder Canyon to Nederland. From downtown Nederland, go south on Highway 72 for .5 miles to County Road 130 and make a right. You will see a sign for Eldora Ski Resort at this junction. Veer to the right and continue on Highway 130 through the town of Eldora, just past which it becomes a dirt road (4 miles). 2WD drive conditions end 4.8 miles from the Highway 72 turnoff. Park along the roadside - we'll meet here and walk together on the 4WD road to the Hessie Trailhead.
Carpooling always recommended from your area. I live up north and can meet some carpoolers at the free parking lot located on the northeast corner of Highway 93 and CO 170 (road to Eldorado Springs). Meet me there at 7:15am.
Optional Lunch at the Wild Mountain BBQ & Brewery in Nederland.
See you there!
