Rattlesnake Trail

  • Dec 6, 2012 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

A moderately difficult trail leading 1.4 miles (one way) past spectacular views of the canyon and eastern plains to the remains of historic Crags hotel, 600 feet above the trailhead. Built in 1908, the hotel was accessed via an inclined railway from the canyon floor until it burned down in 1913. The trail continues as a .8 mile loop as it travels to a view of the Continental Divide and the railroad tracks, 1,200 feet above the trailhead. The trail is 1.4 miles to the ruins and another .8 mile for the loop, making the total roundtrip distance about 3.6 miles. Dogs allowed on leash.

Weather: It's Colorado, so watch the weather and dress for the weather. If in doubt, bring a small duffle bag with all your options! Always bring extra layers, a warm wind/moisture resistant jacket, gloves, hat, neck gaiter, poles, micro spikes and whatever else you need to make this an enjoyable experience. Please - No cotton or jeans for winter hikes.

Park Entrance Fee: $8 park entrance fee or free with a Colorado State Parks Pass.

Parking at the Trailhead: There are about 6 spaces at the trailhead and additional parking at the Visitor Center. It's a short walk from the Visitors Center to the trailhead - tell someone if you're parking at the Visitors Center so they wait for you at the trailhead.

Carpooling: Meet me at the parking lot at the corner of CO 170 and Highway 93 (northeast corner) at 9:30am to form some carpools.

Directions: Eldorado Canyon State Park is located just southwest of Boulder on CO 170. Head west on CO 170 from Highway 93 following signs to Eldorado Canyon. The road is dirt when you enter the small town of Eldorado Springs - keep driving toward the Ranger Station into the park.

Optional lunch at the Southern Sun located at 627 South Broadway, Boulder, CO[masked] in the shopping center at Broadway and Table Mesa. FYI - Highway 93 turns into Broadway in South Boulder and it's a couple miles to the restaurant. Turn into the shopping center on your left before you reach the light at Table Mesa. The restaurant is in the northeast corner next to the sports store. They open for lunch at 11:30 and bring cash because they don't accept credit cards.

Linda and Terry, though I didn't get the chance to hike with the group thanks for allowing me to have lunch with you folks. I'll never pass up a Southern Sun Burger unless I'm having a patty melt at the Franklin Hotel, but that's in Deadwood, South Dakota!

If you bring gallon milk jugs you can fill them up with El Dorado Spring water for $.25 near the entrance/exit station. It 's the same El Dorado Spring water you buy at the store.

On 12 / 6 I will be at the North Table Mountain parking lot at 08:45. Leaving at 08:50 to car pool up to the 93 / 170 lot to meet the folks there. I can carry six and have a CO parks pass. Please email me if you plan on meeting me there and I'll send you my cell number so you can call if you're running late.
