April Kettle Moraine North Weekend

This is an Intermediate Level trip.

Friday April 5th
There are parking lots at the north and south end of the Zillmer Trails section with the southern lot being a little closer to the shelter. Both lots require a parking sticker and have self-registration stations. There won’t be a set meeting time, instead arrive and hike in as your schedule permits. Shelter 6 is located near where the red and green trail overlaps. There are two bridges near each other with trail on both sides of the stream. The shelter is located northwest of the southwest bridge. The shelter isn’t visible from the bridge but you should be able to see the signpost and trail to the shelter from it.

Saturday April 6th
In the morning we’ll hike out from Shelter 6 to the Zillmer Trails south parking lot. There we can replenish water from the well and shuttle vehicles as necessary. The hike from Shelter 6 to Shelter 1 is approximately 12 miles. From the parking lot we’ll road walk County Highway SS a short distance east to the bike trail and follow it south. We then have the option of using the Tamarack Trail to link up with the IAT at Mauthe Lake or use the Bridle Trail and link to the IAT further south. We’ll finish at Shelter 1 near the south end of the Kettle Moraine North unit. There is a hand pump for well water near the shelter.

Sunday April 7th
We’ll hike the short distance to the south trailhead at County Highway H and shuttles people as necessary.

General Info
The shelters do have a pit toilet/outhouse. The water source for shelter 6 is at the Zillmer south parking lot and the source for shelter 1 is on the IAT just below the shelter. Shelter 6 is a little smaller with less bench space than the rest of the shelters. There’s room for 4 people on the benches and the rest of us will need a tent. If you’d like to claim a spot on the bench please make a post in the comment section. I’m not budgeting for any firewood but if the forecast calls for below normal temps I’d be able to provide for some and we can just chip in a few bucks to cover it. Otherwise we’ll just scavenge for firewood. The Zillmer Trails parking lots require a parking sticker and a self-registration station is available. The County Highway H trailhead parking lot near Shelter 1 does not require a parking sticker.

Average temperatures for this time of year -- Hi 50-55, Low 25-30

Randall; I am interested. Will I need my waders for these trails at this time of year?

You mean it's a piece of carbon fiber over your Sasquatch bait? Carbon fiber is pretty pricey, it's going to cost you lots!

I'm still new to this group and to this area. I understand you need to do some beginner hikes before going on intermediate hikes. is there any "loop-hole" to this. My youth pastor and I would love to go on this hike.

Welcome to out group! Here's the loophole - "Demonstrate previous experience/skill to an organizer." If you've done trips that relate to our intermediate or advanced skill ratings and can convince me of that and it sound as though you can handle the hike and have the appropriate gear I could do that for you. If you want to contact me, click on my picture and there's a send email link on the profile page. Also, we don't allow members to bring guests on trips meaning you'd both have to be members of the meetup. This ensures that everyone on the trip has read and agreed to the terms of service which releases the meetup and organizers from liability.
