This trip was suggested by Sean who did most of the work to organize it. Please make sure to thank him for this trip.
Friday April 26th
We will gather Friday night at the Ice Age Campsite 517-518. Devils Lake State Park is going through some electrification project and only a few handful of sites are available. We were not able to get a group campsite as it was a "first come-first serve" basis. Therefore we reserved 2 side-by-side campsite. Please plan on carpooling because Devil's Lake has a policy of 2 cars parked per campsite. There are a few parking spots for those extra cars but it will be a ways down our campsites. You are required to have a state park sticker to enter the devil's lake area. There won’t be a set meeting time, instead arrive when you can on Friday night.
**Prepare on backpacking and not car camping. Sites will be tight and won't have much room. Plan on bringing smaller tents and just the basic gear. Keep in mind that we will be shuttling cars and less equipment means more room for people.**
Saturday April 27th
In the morning we will shuttle a few cars to the Parking lot on Marsh Rd then we will hike to the Marsh Rd parking lot and shuttle back to the campsites once we arrive at our destination. This hike will be approximatively 9.8 miles. There is water near each campsite. --Be sure to bring along a daypack as we will be having lunch on the trail and nowhere near the campsites. You should also bring enough water to last the hike.-- If you want to test yourself, all of your gear with you on the hikes. This will help getting yourself in shape for when actual backpacking situation arise. If you do so, please keep make sure you are able to carry your pack throughout the hike.
Sunday April 28th
We’ll shuttle a few cars to Parfrey's Glen area parking lot (then come back to campsite to start the hike). We'll hike to Parfrey's Glen. This hike will be approximatively 6 miles from our campsites. There is water at the parking Parfrey's Glen lot so we can replenish after the hike as well. Be aware that you will be required to clear out the campsite as we head out for the hike and we will not come back to it.
The campsites have nearby bathrooms. It’s possible that showers and flushable toilet might not be available due to constructions. There is a water pump nearby the sites as well. There’s room for 6 people per sites. Devil's Lake State Park require a parking sticker.
Average temperatures for this time of year -- Hi 58, Low 32
We've been having low temperature lately and hopefully it will warm up soon but please plan carefully as at night it may get much colder. Bring appropriate gear.
I just got a reply back from DNR about the construction and water. Here is what we can expect:
- All water in the park will be turned on for the season 1-2 weeks before the late April dates you give. But there is construction work going on in Northern Lights Campground, probably at that time, and that could impact the availability of water facilities in Ice Age Campground, since those two campgrounds share a water system. There will be at least, pit toilets to use in Ice Age Campground. At worst, you might have to go the north shore headquarters building to fill water jugs. It’s possible that showers might not be available.
- Water should be available along the IA trail in the park at the Group Camp and at the north shore Headquarters. Water availability at the south shore picnic area may be affected by a major project on the water/sewer pumping station there.
