Kettle Moraine North August Trip

  • Aug 2, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is an Intermediate Level trip due to the long mileage.
*Be aware that this is a high mileage trip and temperatures may be hot. This trip is for the most experienced and physically fit individuals.

Friday August 2nd
Assemble at Backpacking Shelter 2 after 5pm as your schedule permits.  The hike from the parking area to the shelter is about 1/3 mile. Parking is located on County S Road. There isn't access to well water near shelter 2 like the other shelters so plan to bring enough for Friday night and half of the hike Saturday. Butler Lake trail area will have a hand pump where we will be able to fill up again.
I plan on shuttling the car on Friday night so we can get moving early on saturday morning without having to worry about the cars.

Saturday August 3rd
The hike from Shelter 2 to Shelter 4 is about 12.9 miles. Butler Lake is past shelter 3 and has water. Depending on how early we hike out (to beat the heat and all) we could have lunch at butler lake. The water source for shelter 4 is about a mile away at the Parnell Tower parking lot.

Sunday August 4th.
We’ll continue north on the IAT another 3.75 miles to the Greenbush Trail Area parking lot.  We’ll hike to our vehicles and shuttle people as necessary.

General Info
The shelters do have a pit toilet/outhouse but do not have a water source.  They don’t have a fireplace or stove but provide excellent protection from the wind and elements.  Participation will be limited to 10 persons based on the DNR shelter occupancy limit. There are benches along the walls to sleep on but they won’t accommodate 10 people.  There is plenty of floor space and we are allowed to set up tents around the shelter.  A State park parking sticker is required for parking in the Kettle Moraine area.

Average temps for this time of year: High = 78, Low = 54
