Trip is available to all Levels.
There will be 1.4mi of Road walking, just an FYI if you are not comfortable with that.
Friday October 11th.
Assemble at Devils Lake State Park after 5pm as your schedule permits. I have site 433 in the Ice Age Campground Loop on the north end of the park. 2 cars will be allowed at the sites all other will need to be parked in overflow parking. Please plan on backpacking camping and not car camping. Weather permitting water and bathroom facilities shall still be open and running at this time of the year. A WI State Park vehicle sticker is required to enter and park a car within the park.
Feel free to try and carpool with others.
Saturday October 12th
We will need to shuttle cars come morning unless we accomplish this Friday night. For the rest of the cars we will leave parked in the lot by the visitor center and begin our hike from there. All cars left at Devils Lake SP will need a WI State Park Vehicle Sticker.
Total mileage for the day will be just over 8 miles. We will begin the hike with a slightly intensive hike along the East Bluff Trail which will provide us with scenic overlooks of Devils Lake. Once the trail merges with the Ice Age Trail (IAT) we will follow that east along the south bluff. For the rest of the day we will continue down the IAT and leave the park toward the town of Merrimac. Just outside of Merrimac we will hit Marsh Road for a 1.4mi connecting road route to the Merrimac Ferry. We will ride the 7min, free Ferry(available 24x7) across the Wisconsin River and get back on the Trail for the ~1mi left to the IAT Dispersed Camping Area (DCA).
There is no privy or water available at the DCA so plan accordingly(ie trowel for catholes & possible filtration). The IAT trail guide does say there is water available on both sides of the river but do not depend on that being available. I will plan on leaving a stash of water with the cars we will be leaving near the site too. The IAT also prefers against fires at the DCAs so plan on having a stove if you are needing to heat up water for your dinner.
Sunday October 13th
We’ll have a very short hike out of about 1 mile. Can make it longer if desired as there are a couple of loops available near the site that we can take advantage of.
We shall then gather the cars from Devils Lake and make our way home.
As mentioned above a State Park parking sticker is required for entry and parking at Devils Lake SP. Water and toilet facilities should still be open but would not depend on that as their shut off date is the following week. They prefer no fires at the DCA so you will need to plan on having a stove for heat source for dinner. You will need to plan on bringing your own shelter, food, and all other personal gear. Trip is limited to 6 people due to Devils Lake max occupants per site and to reduce impact at the DCA.
Average temps for this time of year: High = 61, Low = 36
