Trip is an Intermediate Level trip.
Friday November 8th.
Assemble at Shelter #1 in the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit, I won't be making it there until around 5pm. Parking is available off of State Highway 67 at the STH-67 Wayside. From the wayside take the IAT 0.4mi north to the spur trail for the shelter. State Park sticker is required for parking in the State Forest.
Saturday November 9th
We will walk back out to the cars and shuttle in the morning.
Total mileage for the day will be about 18 miles. After shuttling the cars we will start from the wayside rest and continue south on the IAT. We will hike down the IAT stopping for lunch maybe around the Visitor Center & Forest headquarters or further down the trail. We will continue to make our way to Shelter #3 for the night.
Sunday November 10th
Our hike out will be about 4.4 miles to get to our cars at the Blackhawk/Whitewater Lake segments parking lot. Shuttle cars as needed and then begin our journeys back home.
The shelters do have a pit toilet/outhouse but do not have a water source. So for Saturday night there might be water available at the Visitor Center if it is still turned on. I will also plan on leaving some water caches near Shelter 3 for us. They don’t have a fireplace or stove(outdoor pit) but provide excellent protection from the wind and elements. Participation will be limited to 10 persons based on the DNR shelter occupancy limit. There are benches along the walls to sleep on but they won’t accommodate 10 people. There is plenty of floor space and we are allowed to set up tents around the shelter. Hopefully there will be no snow yet so we can scavage for firewood.
Average High Temp: 45 - Average Low Temp: 29
A State park parking sticker is required for parking in the Kettle Moraine area.
