A relaxing winter trip at the Newport State Park. Mileage will be low but expect below freezing temperatures and be prepared. The park ranger assure me that there will be no hunting near the campsites and the trails. (Deer hunting ends Dec. 8th) Wear blaze orange for safety reasons.
A maximum of 6 persons per site is allowed. Sites are first come, first served and we will reserve more sites if needed. These are backpacking sites only, therefore you are required to hike to the campsites. Stash some water in your car in case the water is turned off at the parking lot. Dress accordingly as trails and sites may be snow covered.
Friday 13 December, 2013
Arrive and park at the parking lot #2 on Friday night as your schedule permits. A State Park sticker is required to park there. We will be staying at sites 7-8. These sites are first come, first served so there is no guarantee they are available, please arrive on time or leave me your numbers so I can text you/message you what actual site we're on.
There will be no need to shuttle car at that weekend as we are going to loop around the State park. *The sites are by Lake Michigan so expect wind and colder temperature at our campsites and during the hike.
Saturday 14 December, 2013
On Saturday, we will pack up our stuff and head to our second site. Hiking should be around 5-8 miles, depending on which loop we decide on taking. We will be staying at sites 14-15.
*The sites are by the lake Michigan so expect wind and colder temperature.
Sunday 15 December, 2013
Hike back to the parking lot, and back to the holiday festivities! :)
All sites are wooded. Most sites have open-air toilets, unless they share a pit toilet with another site. Open-air toilets only have a 4- foot wooden back screen. There are no walls, roof, or door. They will not see another site from their site. All sites have shoreline access to Lake Michigan, with the exception of site 14, which is on the Europe Lake Shoreline. Tents may not be set up on shoreline areas.
Site amenities include pit toilet, two wooden benches, a combination fire ring/grill, and a metal food storage box. There are no picnic tables at the sites. Drinking water is available at the picnic area hand pump, from May through October, and at the park office year-round. Dead and downed wood may be collected for firewood. Porcupines and raccoons can be a problem. Garbage must be packed out of the site. No showers are available.
