New Member's Weekend

This is an event for beginners and new members with an emphasis on education and instruction.

We'll arrive on Friday afternoon, set up tents, have an evening meal of your own creation, and socialize around a fire.  This will be a great opportunity to get to know several of the club leadership team as well as fellow new members.  It's also a chance to get an early season Beginner Level walk in your log to get you closer to Intermediate trips.  Adult beverages are allowed in moderation.

On Saturday, we'll conduct lectures and seminars through most of the day.  Topics included will be:

Basic First Aid

Hygiene

Water treatment/filtration

Food

Gear:

Clothing

Footwear

Pack Systems

Sleep Systems

Shelters

Cook Systems

Lighting

Time permitting, we'll pack up our gear and do a hike around High Cliff Park, then re-group and settle back in at the camp site.

The site is limited to 20 people.   Pit toilets and drinking water are available.  High Cliff does require a State Park sticker to enter.

Cost will be $15 per person and will cover two nights camping, the Meetup fee, and firewood.  It does NOT include any State Park Sticker costs.

Just took a look at the High Cliff website to get a map and saw this alert, just a heads up in case this is still in effect/affects our camp site

Alert: Showers, flush toilets, drinking water and the dump station are not available due to a Upper Park water-main break. We hope to have the needed work completed in early May 2014. Anyone wishing to camp in the month of April or early May can contact the park office at[masked] for more information.

First event with the group!! I'll be bringing my hammock (though I'll be sleeping in my tent!) I'll set it up and we can take turns relaxing in it!

I will bring my tripod for cooking over the fire so feel free to bring burgers, steak, etc. for dinner. I will also bring my 3 man tent & 3 twin air mattresses along. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

I just joined the group, this event sounds great! Would I be able to camp Friday but not Saturday? If so, would there be a tent I could use?

    April 22, 2014

    • Ross

As long are there are spaces left, it's OK by me. However we cannot offer a one night discount. Also, you'd have to stay through the training portion to receive credit for a Beginner's event.

      April 23, 2014

    • Ross

See Melanie's comment below regarding tent space. We;ll be able to accommodate everyone.

I'm really looking forward to this weekend! Does anyone mind if I bring my dog?

    April 22, 2014

    • Melanie

High Cliff allows pets in the campground but we have to insure that your dog is well behave. If any issue arise, you may be sent home. As long as you're okay with this rule, you're more than welcome to bring your dog.

I will be bringing a large car camping tent and extra car camping sleeping bags for those who do not have any gear as well.

I have extra tents and backpacks and sleeping pads I will bring also. As Ross said this weekend is your opportunity to learn and try out different gear. Go shopping for your gear after this weekend. If you go to "More" at the top of this page and then click on " Files" you will find a gear list you can use, you'll need to scroll down a little ways, and also a "Cottage Industries" list of gear makers. Looking forward to seeing everyone at High Cliff.

Which water treatment/filtration should we buy for this trip? It's been so long since I last used one.

    April 1, 2014

    • Matt W.

Try the different ones we'll bring to the trip, ask questions and then buy what works best for you. Can't stress enough that the time to go shopping for your gear is after this trip. We'll show you lot's of different gear and do our best to answer your questions and give you good advice.

      April 1, 2014

    • Ross

I agree with Matt. Wait until after to buy water treatment. Just bring tap water or bottled for this trip. Make your treatment decisions after.

Hi everyone. Like Elena I don't have a tent either. I do have a sleeping bag that should suffice, though. If someone could lend me a tent for the High Cliff outing, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I'll bring a few tents. We'll get you set up.

No worries. I will have you set with a tent. As for the PM, just click on someone's name and you will see a "send e-mail" option just below where their name is.

Maybe it is hard to figure when I am writing from iPhone but I will take a look when I am on the computer. Well I didn't get anything today in the store (mall). The selection was little and I am not sure if it was worth it to spend that amount. I guess I will wait and just pack in whatever I can find to use because we will be staying at one spot. Thank you Ross for helping with tent !
