KMSF-NU -- Greenbush Hike-In w/Cinco de Mayo taco bar

This is an intermediate level trip due to distance.

Overview

Friday night, hike in approximately 1 mile and spend the night at Shelter 6.  Saturday, hike approximately 15.5 miles to Greenbush Group Camp site 2 and stay the night there.  Sunday, leaving options open to continue hiking or head home.

Saturday we will also rendezvous with the Chicago Suburbs Backpackers at Shelter 3 or on the trail and share the group site with them that evening.  Saturday night will also include an optional taco bar meal at the group site.

Average temps for this time of year, high of 65° F, low of 40° F

Friday May 2nd

Assemble at Shelter 6 located in the Zillmer Trails area in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.  There won’t be a set meeting time, instead arrive and hike in as your schedule permits.  Please park in the Zillmer Trails area southern parking lot located of off County Highway SS; we will shuttle vehicles from there in the morning.  THIS LOT DOES REQUIRE A PARKING STICKER, a self-registration station is available.

Shelter 6 is located about a mile from the parking lot.  Start on the green trail and follow it to the right (counterclockwise on the map) to the first bridge.  At this point the green trail loops back toward the parking lot while the red trail continues on.  Follow the trail on either side of the stream a very short distance southwest to the second bridge.  From the north side of that bridge the signpost and path to the shelter should be visible looking to the northwest.

Everyone should bring a tent.  Although we have a shelter available to us here our site for Saturday night has no shelter.

Saturday May 3rd

Our overall distance for the day will be 15.5 miles hiking from shelter 6 to the group site at Greenbush.

In the morning we’ll hike out approximately a mile from shelter 6 to the Zillmer Trails area south parking lot.  From there we’ll shuttle vehicles to the main Greenbush parking lot which DOES REQUIRE A PARKING STICKER, a self-registration station is available.  Before we start down the trail we can use the well to replenish our water.

Our hike will follow the green Zillmer Trail for a short distance to the bike trail taking it another short distance to County Road SS.  From there we’ll road walk SS approximately half of mile where we’ll pick up the Snowmobile/Bridle Trail and take it 2.5 miles to Division Road near shelter 3.  There will be a group from the Chicago Suburban Backpackers staying at shelter 3 Friday night so we’ll either join up with them there of someplace along the trail.  From there the hike is approximately 11 miles and a bit more straight forward following the shelter spur to the Ice Age Trail and following it to the Greenbush Group camp.

Along the way there will be a well and hand pump at Butler Lake where we can get water and take a short break.  Shelter 4 might be another good place for a break.  After shelter 5 there is another well and hand pump but if you have any water left continue on to the well at the Greenbush parking lot.

Leave the IAT following the signs to the Greenbush parking lot; if you hit Kettle Moraine Drive, you’ve gone too far.  At the northwest corner of the parking lot is a well; this is the water source for our area of the group camp.  From that corner of the parking lot there is a gravel road leading back to the group sites, follow the road and signs to group site 2.

I will be acquiring several bundles of firewood to use at the group camp.

Cinco de Mayo Taco Bar

The Cinco de Mayo post hike taco bar tradition will continue this year.  I’ll get all the taco fixings and do some of the prep work ahead of time and pack everything in a cooler and make sure it’s in a vehicle at the group site.  I’ll need a little help warming up meat and beans but other than that relax and enjoy.  It usually includes a variety of hard and soft taco, seasoned ground beef, refried and black beans, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, guacamole, tortilla chips, salsa and cheese dip, more than enough to overfill a tummy.  The meal is an additional $5 and not included in the price of the meetup.  Please let me know with a comment when you RSVP if you want to be included.  If there is a surplus in taco funds I’ll use it to pick up some appropriate beverages.

Sunday May 4th

There won’t be anything scheduled but options include packing up and going home, shuttling cars and hiking some more of the IAT or taking advantage of the nearby Greenbush Hiking Trail loops.

The Survivor Challenge we talked about has been postponed until August 15-16, so if any of you are interested this gives you more time to find a sponsor. Website isn't updated yet but this is the page to watch: http://bubolzpreserve.huterra.com/content/survivor-challenge
They also have a Facebook page which is updated a little more regularly.

Thanks for the update! I'll have to figure out who to talk to here at Miller.

Loved the campsite at shelter 6, though the shelter itself wasn't much. Great group of people! Also, the taco bar was epic :)

Maybe next time you will be brave enough to sleep in the shelter like the tough girls.

Sybille and I could be at the Greenbush camping area for 7pm. If someone could meet us we could leave my van (seven passenger Toyota Sienna) at Greenbush and car pool with you to the start.

I'm running behind 15 minutes or so. Let me know if you'll wait or if I should go straight to Zillmer. [masked]

    • Amber

I'm running a few minutes behind, too. I don't think it will throw off the plans too much.

The weather forecast is cold and rainy this weekend. I would rather not go when it is cold. I already paid so can I just switch to a different trip down the line?

    April 29, 2014

    • Randall

Sorry but the only way you could get back the money you paid in is if the trip fills up. In that case it would be like someone else is buying your spot. We do it this way because the meetup still pays for the sites even if no one shows up and we do the refund if the trip fills because the meetup doesn't need to make money, just cover expenses.

    • Randall

Looks like the weather is going to be better than expected at least for Saturday and Sunday. You're can jump back in or meet us Saturday since you've already paid.

Possibly! I sent you a private message.

I'll be carpooling with Michelle and Melanie. Planning to arrive by about 7pm.

Randall - I'm in for the taco bar .

Randall - I would like to be included in the taco bar. Should I just pay you on Friday Evening?

    March 28, 2014

    • Randall

Anytime that weekend would be fine.

Does anyone know if these campsites have good trees for hanging a hammock? I have a regular tent as well, but wanted to give the hammock another try...

    March 27, 2014

    • Bryan

I use a hammock regularly - you can always find trees. I've had no issues at KMN.

      March 27, 2014

    • Randall

Shelter 6 (Friday night)has lots of room and some good trees. I'm think you could find something at the group site (Saturday night) but that site is more like a mowed rectangle with brush and trees beyond the mowed area.

Randall - I would like to be included in the taco bar. Thanks for setting this up!

wish I could make it to this one, it's an awesome trip...there's a taco bar and everything. Oh, and the woods, they're awesome too.

  • Erika

Is this a straight hike then? On Saturday night, we end up near where the cars are? I have a commitment on Sunday at 3:00 and would need to hightail it out on Sunday morning.

    March 14, 2014

    • Randall

Hi Erika, we could make sure your vehicle gets to the group site when we shuttle Sat AM. There is room for a couple cars at the site and the main parking lot is pretty close, by backpacking standards.
