This trip is a beginner level trip. Expect low milage and easy terrain hiking along the Lake Michigan Shoreline and through lakeshore forest. Fresh water should be available about a half mile from our campsite. Your $20covers camping costs for both nights, meetup fees, and firewood for both nights. You'll need to provide your own food and other provisions, as well as a valid park sticker for your car.
Both nights we’ll be camping in the group site “G”. This site is approximately .5 miles from parking lot 3. I’m going to buy wood, and would appreciate some volunteers to help me carry it in!
This trip is a great option for first time backpackers. We'll be on the same campsite both nights, so you have the option of packing everything up both mornings and carrying it with you to test yourself, or you can treat it like a day hiking trip and leave most of your gear at the site. We'll never be more than a few miles from the campsite, and there are a number of shortcuts that can be taken if you feel you won't make it the entire distance.
We’ll hike about 7 miles, mostly sticking to the Europe Lake trail loop.
We’ll hike about 6 miles to the south through the Newport Conifer-Hardwoods State Natural Area, and past Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge and back to our cars. We'll scrounge some lunch on the way out.
This trip is rated for beginners, but you must have all the gear needed for an overnight backpacking trip in the backcountry and prepared to be self-sufficient. Main gear needed includes a backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, cookset, a way to treat water, raingear, appropriate clothing and footwear and other personal/miscellaneous items. For a complete list of gear you might want to take along with you, or to simply have a checklist, go to the “More” tab and click on “Files.” In that list is a file called “Fox Cities Backpackers Meetup Suggested Gear List.” Look that over to be sure you will be adequately prepared. Feel free to contact me or other group organizers if you would like advice about your gear, or sign up for a gear shakedown.

During your registration, Meetup will ask you for your first and last names, as well as your license plate number. It is important that you provide these for me, so I can arrive at the park office prepared for our registration. We'll need to arrange for carpooling, as we are only allowed 6 cars in the lot. We can figure out those logistics closer to the date of the hike.
