Kettle Moraine North - Single Night

This is an INTERMEDIATE LEVEL trip due to temperatures.

Meet at 9am in the New Fane Trails parking lot off of County Line Road.  This lot requires a parking sticker; a self-registration station is available.  First we will shuttle vehicles to the parking area for shelter 3 on Division Road which does not require a parking sticker.  Once vehicles are transferred we will begin our hike.  The distance to shelter 3 using mainly the Ice Age Trail is approximately 9 miles.  Our only chance to replenish water will be at the Mauthe Lake entrance station (we could also leave a couple gallons in a vechicle at the shelter).  Saturday night, your option, sleep in the shelter or in a tent.  Be aware that depending on the number of participants and if everyone chooses to stay in the shelter there may not be enough room on the benches for everyone to sleep.  We may need to use some of the dusty sand floor so a ground tarp may be in order.  I will bring a tarp to cover the door of the shelter to keep the wind out.  I will also provide several firewood bundles for the fire.

Please be aware that the meeting place could change and the overall distance shorted should the weather or trail conditions be poor.  I’m planning distance according to what would be normal for mid-March conditions.  If plans should change I will send an email to the participants closer to the hike date.

We can decide what to do Sunday morning around the campfire Saturday night.  Since the parking area is very close to the shelter I may pack up and drop off my gear in a vehicle and do one of the loops behind the shelter or possible hike to lunch.  Some of this depends on the snowmobile trails being closed for the season.  If anyone needs to leave first thing in the morning we can make sure your vehicle is at the shelter.

For a post hike lunch I’d like to try the Woodland Creek Supper Club in New Prospect.  I’ve been wanting to try this place.  Along with some more upscale meals they offer burgers and pizza, a good selection of WI beers on tap and make an impressive Blood Mary from what I hear.

??? FRIDAY NIGHT 14 MARCH 2014 ???

I’m not posting anything for Friday night because of weather related uncertainty not because I won’t be out camping somewhere.  I have an igloo behind my house and would like to invite folks to join me out there Friday night.  However, mid-March is a pretty uncertain time for igloos.  If the weather isn’t igloo friendly and instead shows signs of spring I may reserve a shelter for Friday night.  I’ll keep everyone posted.

The shelters do have a pit toilet/outhouse but do not have a water source.  They don’t have a fireplace or stove but provide excellent protection from the wind and elements.  I will bring a tarp to cover the door and windows.  I will also drop off some dry firewood ahead of time to ensure we can have a toasty campfire.  Participation will be limited to 10 persons based on the DNR shelter occupancy limit.  There are benches along the walls to sleep on but they won’t accommodate 10 people.  There is plenty of floor space and we are allowed to set up tents around the shelter.  A parking sticker isn’t required for the roadside lot at shelter 3 but is for the New Fane Trails lot and a self-registrations station is available.

Average temps for this time of year, high of 43 F, and low of 21 F

Record high for March 15, 78 F

Record low for March 15, -6 F

I was out in the Kettles Monday/Tuesday.

The snow was packed because of the below freezing temps. It melted a bit because of the sun in the afternoon but was still fine to hike on. I didn't need snowshoes nor crampons. Some areas were icier than other and the snowmobile trail were much icier than the actual Ice Age Trail. I recommend trekking poles. Have fun out there and hopefully you get good weather! :)

Also tomorrow is suppose to be in the 50's. Which will affect the snow. I hope it freezes back up for you on Saturday.
