Kettle Moraine North New Fane Trip #2 Lead by Dennis

**Trip has been planned and will be lead by Dennis W.**

KMSF-N, New Fane Trail Parking Area to Shelter 1
(Saturday and Sunday event only)

May 31st & June 1st: A short backpacking outing for beginners but has short off trail segments.
Saturday May 31st 10 AM: meet at the New Fane Area Parking
Saturday morning: hike7 ½ miles to shelter 1
Sunday afternoon: return to New Fane Area Parking about 7 miles

Saturday morning at 10AM we will leave the New Fane parking area and use several different trails and some off trail areas to get to shelter #1, a total of about 71/2 miles.  Saturday night will be spent at shelter one, around a campfire, discussing flowers, cooking and the meaning of life.  Sunday will be much of the same: some off trail, some different trails, a lot of beautiful scenery and about 6 ½-7 miles back to the New Fane parking.  The different trails, along with the twists and turns, will confuse you as to where we are and we will not use the same trails on the return trip.  Often we will be in areas that are rarely used by others

While this is a short backpacking trip and is available for beginners, it isn't for day hikers. About a mile each day will be off trail through the woods.  Anyone interested should be capable of handling the off trail aspects and miles the with a pack.  We will encounter some hills, brush and grasses when off trail but no rough terrain.

There are toilet and water facilities at both the parking and shelter areas.  Bring your tent, food and other gear needed to sustain life and prepare for wet weather and I also suggest long pants because of the off trail areas. Bring your camera because we will be in a lot of Kodak moment spots.

I had so much fun on this trip! It was great to have someone so knowledgeable about the area so we could see some awesome areas. Thanks Dennis :)

Dennis does a great job of leading and guiding as he leads you through the ins and outs of Kettle Moraine N. He strays from the beaten path often to show you little treasures in the woods. You get a little confused as to were you are at times but he always keeps it interesting. Thanks Dennis.

Well people it looks like the weather gods are on our side; great temperatures and no rain. I was in KMFS-N today and it is really green and buggy. They are waiting to ambush anyone with warm blood so bring your repellent. Any problems give me a call in the morning.

I am trying to decide if I'm brave enough to go on my first trip ever...I don't have a tent though. What other supplies other than courage, food, appropriate clothing would I need? Thanks!

Sandy, Dan did a good job of outlining what you will need. You can however not worry about a tent and sleep in the shelter, there are raised shelf/platform around the inside.

If your not sure about what to take bring everything; we will have time in the morning to go through it with you and decide what's necessary.

Sooounds fun :-) I can't wait! I'm glad too because I like to treat my knees fairly. Hey Dennis, I have a few extra days so I was thinking on heading out on my own sunday to shelter 3. Do you have any problem with that?

    May 28, 2014

    • Dennis W

I have no problem with you extending your stay but do you have shelter 3 reserved? When I reserved shelters for my two trips all the shelters were taken and I had to settle for what I got. That shelter is about 9 miles from the New Fane Parking and the weather is going to get bad later Sunday

Hi Ken, glad to see you signed up. If you liked my last outing you'll love this one; lots of neat off the beaten path areas. I'll even try and find some steep slopes to wear out your pants on the other knee.
