Maiden Peak Cabin Trip

First of all, I'd like to apologize to Linda, whom I'm totally stealing this from ;-)
A&P is kicking my butt, so I'm taking the entire week of my spring break off from work and am bound and determined to do something that involves getting out of PDX for a couple of days and carrying 25+ pounds on my back. When I did this trip last year the weather didn't cooperate at all so we didn't see any views (still quite pretty though!). Here's what I have in mind- let's head down to Willamette Pass and snowshoe in ~6 miles/~1000 ft to the Maiden Peak cabin for at least an overnight, and a second night if the weather cooperates and allows us to venture forth and day trip from the cabin.

Things have firmed up a bit so I'll pull the itinerary up from the comments section...

The plan is to leave PDX Sunday morning (on the road NLT 6:00am- the earlier the better!) and drive down to Willamette Pass (OR 58) to Gold Lake Sno-park, where we'll start the snowshoe to the cabin from. Monday we'll get up at a reasonable hour and will have all day in which to make the trip to Maiden Peak, then spend another night in the cabin. We'll get up at a reasonable hour Tuesday morning and head back to our cars and home.

Now we just need to figure out who's driving, where to meet, and equipment sharing (stoves, fuel, H2O filter).

That was a 70 mile ride at 5am, I think a few boys owe me dinner. :)

I took Monday & Tuesday off work.

Sorry, guys...I feel bad for pulling out but it's turned out to be the right decision. I've spent almost the whole day Sunday shivering under a mound of covers in bed and would not have been doing any of us any favors if I'd tried to go anyway. I'm pretty bummed...I felt good enough to go on Saturday but Sunday's been a different story. :-(

The weather is changing :( the rain is moving in on Monday. Zach, fix this with your weather God please.

    March 23, 2013

    • Matt T

You're not going to see rain. High of 38 on Tues at Willamette Pass with 60% chance of snow...and most of the snowshoeing is well above that elevation. What you're going to get is a nice fresh powder to make the snowshoeing even better!

Ok awesome. Well I'll still bring my stove since it's super light.

      March 22, 2013

  • Denise

Looks like 3 & 80%. Weather still looking awesome, I'm ready to enjoy. What's everyone drive? I have a V6 so might be $ any other more economical?

    March 20, 2013

    • Matt T

Denise, if your vehicle is bigger than mine and is fine in the (potential) snow, i'd vote to take yours. May be more comfortable for everybody. What kind do you have?

      March 22, 2013

    • Denise

You guys might be able to sweet talk me for leg/gear room. Carry me, my pack & buy gas.

Johnny confirmed that he got the time off (he asked me to post it since he can't access Meetup right now at work) so he'll be joining us for sure this weekend.

Just talked to my boss and he doesn't foresee a problem, but wants to check one more thing before telling me for sure. I'd say 80% probability that I can go.

    March 19, 2013

  • Zachary

Looks like there's snow on the ground down yonder (http://www.willamettepass.com/mountain/snowreport.php), which is always a good sign! How do y'all want to work the carpool and where should we meet at? I live in Sellwood with good parking and easy access to I-5, so that's one option. The other question is the drive itself- 1 or 2 cars (1 would be ideal). I only have room for 3, so I'm pretty much out.

    March 18, 2013

    • Matt T

I'm sure we can do 1 car...it makes more sense for that distance. Once Johnny finds out whether he can get the days off we can finalize who's driving.

      March 19, 2013

    • Matt T

And I'm fine with Sellwood...south end of town makes sense anyway. I'm on NW 22nd & parking's kind of tight here.

      March 19, 2013

  • Zachary

Also there's the question of equipment sharing- I'll bring my iso-butane stove and filter along (we'll be melting snow for water up there). Other than the weather, the only real wild card I can think of is the possibility that there won't be any firewood at the cabin, so we'll want to pack in some extra fuel. Speaking of the weather, the forecast is looking pretty good- keeping my fingers crossed!!

    March 18, 2013

    • Matt T

We had 8 inches of fresh snow at our winter hut at Barlow Butte this past weekend...if only we could be so lucky next weekend! I have no stove or fuel, but don't mind helping to lug things up there if you guys have it to bring...

Getting excited! Johnny did you get granted the days off? Doesn't appear anyone else is jumping on this so we might be a 1 vehicle show?

Sorry - have to drop off, could not take two days off that week

    March 5, 2013

might be worth considering snowshoeing in via Rosary Lakes...not much longer that direction and if it's a nice day the scenery looks great. just a thought. or maybe even in one way and out the other, since the trailheads are less than a mile apart.

2 nights at the cabin- Sunday & Monday. Here's the short, short version: Leave PDX early Sunday (on the road NLT 6:00am- the earlier the better) and snowshoe into the cabin. Wake up Monday and have all day to make the ~6 mile/1700 ft RT to Maiden Peak. Home Tuesday evening. Sound like a plan?

    March 4, 2013

    • Matt T

      that would work for me!

      March 4, 2013

I have a commitment on Sunday 3/24 and Monday 3/25, otherwise I'm wide open for that date range as well and would love to go! Let us know your decision on the dates soon! :)

Oops, just saw your previous post. Disregard mine. Sorry, and have fun!

Zack - what is the final choice on the days? Is it Sunday 24th to Tuesday 26th? 2 nights?I might be able to get only one day off that week, so I will have to decide... Thx

    March 4, 2013

  • B.G

Sorry had to dropout since the date wont work for me.

    March 4, 2013

  • Zachary

I went ahead and set it up for 3/24. Now for the fun part- figuring out the timing. Its a 3+ hour drive to get down there which we can handle a couple of ways- We can leave PDX at the crack of dawn in order to get to the TH at a reasonable hour (9ish?), or we can head down the night before and split a cheap hotel however many ways. Thoughts?

    March 4, 2013

    • Matt T

my vote would be for crack of dawn. so are you thinking 2 nights at the cabin? it would be great to get to the summit of maiden peak...

      March 4, 2013

  • Matt T

how soon do you expect to settle on dates? i may need to shift the date of a posted event of mine in order to do this...

    March 4, 2013

  • Brian

what's the limit? I might bail on Tilly Jane that weekend and do this instead
