Mt Jefferson Wilderness Backcountry to the PCT

So let's give this another try. There are only so many weekends before the snow melts out too much for this. But I think this timing will given the trailhead roads some time to melt out at least to the point of only a couple miles of road walking to a trailhead, I would hope. There are other options we could consider if needed.

In any case, there don't need to be a lot of details.  Though I should mention that this will not be an easy weekend.  It's not a peak summit, but it is a lot of backcountry wandering around with the possibility of very varying conditions.  The main details are just that we get out to the trailhead Friday evening, hike all day up to the PCT to South Cinder on Saturday, and then bomb our way back down to the trail we took in early enough Sunday to make it back to Portland for maybe some dinner and brews if anyone feels up to it.

I live in an area that is good for weekend parking as it is a quiet neighborhood, so we can carpool from my place, or plan to meet at Gateway or Sunset if that works better depending on who is going. So who's in? ~Gnarly

Also, here is the trip I did in 2010.  I am thinking we would do the blue "planned route" that we didn't do last time. (I can e-mail this to anyone that would like the higher resolution bmp file)

Any chance I can catch a ride with someone as you go through Salem? I would suggest the south side of the parking lot at the Sportsman Warehouse. It is at Lancaster Dr. SE and N Santiam Hwy. Time?

Well yeah, aiming for leaving Portland at or soon after 4pm should get us there close to then, and then Subway and other even less healthy calorie loads are nearby also. If we get to parking on the TH road (or at it depending on snow) by dusk I am happy with that. Then a hike to get warmed up before camp, either up the trail a bit or to the TH. Either way is good to get us to South Cinder for dinner and sunset tomorrow.

Great company, no views, but great snow up high.

Looks like high winds are in the forecast, bring your guylines.

    April 11, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

Sounds like a good idea. Even just a wall of snow on the windward side would be better than nothing.

What, Jeremiah, you're going now? Man, wish I could make it work this weekend.

I suppose it goes without saying that we'll need snowshoes right?

    April 11, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

That would be a definite, since we will get up to 6700 ft at the top of South Cinder. Personally I am bringing Microspikes for the morning when the snow is hard. My snowshoes are light to carry as I have Northern Lites.

I suppose I'll need two blue bags for the weekend. Wonder if we can hang them outside the car on the way home? Pack It in, pack it out.

I forgot that I have that weekend booked already. If I can change my plans, I'll sign up again if there's room.

Checking the forecast for our new schedule, looks like precipitation with cooler temperatures. We should get snow but no rain. I'll be bringing my GPS. We'll have to be careful to avoid steep, open slopes.

      April 7, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

Yeah, snow would be preferable. The only somewhat steep slope we go up is at the end, but later in the day we should be able to get up it alright. It wasn't even steep enough to glissade down last time I was there.

I live in Salem-- so if I went I could meet you all somewhere before or at the trailhead. I have all the gear except only have a two season tent.

Also, we'll need to get something for Friday dinner. Subway or something? Somewhere around Salem would be a good place to find some warm food.

      April 8, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

Subway meets my needs. If there is one in Salem we can meet at that would be good.

Guys, I gotta back out. Working till 5:30 Friday. Sorry. Sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe next time.

Hi, do you have details on approximate mileage and elevation gain? I walk at an okay pace, but I don't jog on snowshoes (except for short distances). What time did you have in mind for leaving Portland?

    March 27, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

I'll see if I can forward it from my phone. If not I'll be home tomorrow sometime.

Odd thing, I can't find a version of the map that I can read. I looked at one earlier.

  • Alex

I am considering it I am not clear on when we get to the trailhead? What time Friday? and how many miles? thanks

    April 6, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

We'd basically just be getting the driving out of the way Friday. I get out of work at 2:30 and an hour to get home, so realistically 4pm to leave and park by 7 and just a hike to some place to camp. Unless everyone else can be ready earlier in which case I could take my stuff to work and leave the 217 Hall/Scholls Ferry exit at 3pm.

      April 6, 2013

    • Justin "Gnarly" B.

Total miles are only about 7 each wayvas ling as we don't get off track. Due to the B &B Complex fire the area is quite open after a couple hours in the woods.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
