Sorry for the late notice, but I just got word that Big City Mountaineers is hosting an information session tomorrow night! This sounds like a great organization: they basically take kids out in the woods for day hikes as well as weeklong backpacking trips. Most of the overnight trips this year will take place on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, and day hikes are more local, including the Gorge. Volunteer opportunities abound, and they are also still looking for some trip leaders, which is a paid position!
And never fear, if you can't make it to the talk, I included some contact info. and I'm sure they'd be happy to talk with you!
I have been in communication with Mike Gundlach who helps oversee the program, and he offers the following description of the organization and the info. session:
"Big City Mountaineers (BCM) has several great opportunities this summer to participate as a volunteer on week long backpacking expeditions geared towards getting urban youth outdoors. We are looking for folks that share our love of the outdoors and are interested in helping to bring outdoor experiences to youth.
BCM transforms the lives of under-served urban youth through wilderness mentoring expeditions that instill critical life skills. We partner with community-based youth organizations and caring adult volunteers who act as mentors in the field to help young people realize their potential.
You can learn more about volunteering at our next volunteer information session on March 21st at REI from 7-8pm. We would love to have some of you attend our information session. I'm certain there are many of you that would be excellent mentors for BCM youth!
If you are interested in coming or have further questions please reserve a spot by emailing [masked]"
Aaaaaannnddd... FYI I'm just sending out notice about a cool event. I am going to go listen to what they have to say tomorrow night, and I'm going to volunteer with this organization this summer, but I'm not in any way, shape or form in charge of BCM or this event. I am happy to answer basic questions about the organization and this gathering, but if you have more extensive questions, complaints, etc., please contact the dude in charge, Mike, at the email I listed above. That will be a better use of everyone's time. :)
