Balisp Revival 4! lightning talks on (random) @ 500 startups

Hello lady & gentleman hackers!

It's time for another round of balisp lightning talks!

When: Saturday June 2nd at 2pm (note: this time it is NOT the last Saturday of the month).

Where: 500 Startups office (12th floor, 444 Castro Street, Mountain View), the same venue as last time.

The "suggested" topic for this month is (random): meaning either the topic of "random algorithms" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randomized_algorithm) or "any random topic you want". As per usual topic adherence is not enforced ;-)

There will be a long-form presentation on "Randomized Parallel Marking in Mark-and-Sweep Garbage Collectors" by Jay Reynolds Freeman, and there is an open call for lightning talks (5 minutes + 5 minutes QA), which will include:

  • Brian Guarraci -- Viper.io: dynamic reasoning based on REST resources
  • Nick Allen -- No idea. I'll think of something.

Email me if you'd like to reserve a presentation slot so I can put you on the schedule.

See you there!

Take care

Nick

PS

It would be helpful if a couple people can volunteer to help man the front door.

PS2

If you show up late and no one is manning the door, post a comment on the event page for someone to let you in.

Also I think Annie's question was great, let's have a question each time too!

    Agree with Arthur!

Nick, how about a 10 minute format for short presentations that have slightly more detail than a lightning talk?

Stop beating yourself up, Nick! It was an interesting presentation, and you just ran out of time. I would love to see the next incarnation of your talk at a future meeting.

Here are the slides to my... uh.... embarrassing presentation on the approximate string matching algorithm I could program but not explain ;-) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7669309...

Once again, Nick did a great job of organizing a fun meetup, and there were several interesting lightning talks (five minutes each). Jay's twenty-minute talk on probabilistic garbage collection was fascinating. I need to learn more about probabilistic algorithms.
