Balisp Revival 5! lightning talks on long-term consequences @ 500 startups

Hello Lady & Gentlemen Hackers!

The next round of educational lighting talks at 500 Startups will be Saturday July 28 at 2pm.

This time there will be a long-form presentation (20 minutes + 5 minute QA) on the Shen language project ( by Kian Wilcox.

The educational lightning talks segment will be in the new format developed last week (background + 5 min + 5 min QA). The "suggested" topic is "small decisions with big consequences". As per usual, topic adherence is not enforced ;-)

Presentations will include:

  • dynamic reasoning based on REST resources -- Brian Guarraci
  • Skip lists data structure -- Ric Szopa
  • Keyword args: everybody's doing them wrong -- Kartik Agaram
  • BountyOSS: bounties for Open Source Software -- Scott L. Burson
  • Andreas Fuchs -- TBD

Also, feel free to also bring questions for the group (like Annie did for the "meta talk" last meetup) & we will try to squeeze them in at the end.

See you there!

Take care

Like before, it would be helpful if a couple people can volunteer to help man the front door.

If you show up late and no one is manning the door, post a comment on the event page for someone to let you in.

I enjoyed all the talks, including the quick tutorial on skip lists, the live demo of a Raspberry Pi running Clozure Common Lisp, the in-depth talk on Shen, and several other good ones. All the talks were fun and well presented.

Great talks. More generally, the revived balisp group is great. The usual mix of 50% Lisp talks and 50% non-Lisp talks is ideal. This group has a vitality that you don't see in most other meetups.

Why does this topic make me remember the old saw that "computers allow you to make more mistakes faster than anything else besides the combination of handguns and tequila"?
