This month students can learn ballroom tango and jive at beginner, improver and intermediate level, plus a sequence dance in the Square Tango. This fifteen minute sequence dance class is suitable for all levels and will happen at 7.30 pm from week two.
We have improved our teaching system in our Colliers Wood ballroom classes to enable faster progress for students. We now have a dedicated class, and dance trainer, which is held upstairs, for 'Beginners Only' every Sunday from 5.30 pm to 7.00pm, and there's also half an hour of free practice in the dances being taught for these beginner students. Beginners may also attend the easy to learn sequence dance which happens for three weeks out of the four week course, beginning on the second week of each new course at 7.30 pm. Our classes are £6 only for the evening, or £15 for four consecutive weeks, or £25 for 10 consecutive weeks. Class size for beginners is typically between eight and twelve students, and there's no need to bring a partner or book in advance, just turn up at 5.20 pm on any Sunday. Of course, we prefer students to join at the beginning of each monthly course, but won't turn anyone away if they turn up on one of the subsequent weeks.
Our classes downstairs will continue to be taught by our main instructor, Barry Gordon, plus a teaching assistant, so there will be more time available for improving leaders and followers to learn and master new steps and moves, and because we now have a dance trainer plus an assistant downstairs, students will spend less time waiting around. It also means that there will now be two instructors to help and advise our students whilst our students are practicing dancing in pairs.
The first class of the evening for improvers and intermediate level students is from 5.30 pm to 7.00pm, and is a techniques class which focuses on how to do the basics to perfection. There will be no beginners in this class. This is a chance for more experienced students to improve their posture and hold and master such skills as the correct leads, walk, foot positions, and contra body movements for the ballroom tango and jive
When this class finishes, students stay to do half an hour of free practice to CDs, and have a free cup of tea and biscuits.
Next, from 7.30pm to 7.45pm (on weeks 2 and 3 only) all levels of students can learn a simple sequence dance. This month it's the Square Tango
From 7.45pm to 8.30pm improvers and intermediate level students (not beginners) can learn, practice and perfect one or two typical bronze level routines in tango and jive. There will be an instructor and assistant for this class, to speed the leaning process for our students.
From 8.30 pm to 9pm is another tea break (again, tea and biscuits provided free of charge) and improver and intermediate level students can do free dance practice to CDs during this half hour break.
Finally from 9pm to 10pm, for our better students only, there is an intermediate level class, where some additional moves or routines in tango and jive are taught which students can add to their existing steps and routines.
On the last Sunday each month our classes are from 5.30 pm to 8 pm only, and we hold a social dance from 8pm to 10pm where students can bring their own drinks and snacks- this is incuded in the usual entry fee, and outsiders are welcome. This is a chance for all students to practice their new moves in a social dance situation.
Colliers Wood Ballroom Dancers enjoy the use of a large dance floor, superior sound system, natural ventilation, near equal numbers of male and female students, a good mix of ages, dedicated teaching staff, and we are steadily becoming the one of the fastest and most efficient dance schools in Greater London for students to become competent and elegant in social ballroom and the main Latin dances. We are certainly one of the the cheapest schools to learn ballroom for social situations.
