Cosplay 101 Panel/Workshop

  • Feb 22, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • Shawn Padraic Murphy's Place - (304) 542-6445

The format of this panel/workshop is going to be a group discussion with me leading it to keep things on topic. Everyone will have their input after I talk about the main points of each topic. You are more than welcome to ask questions about each current topic. I want to make this a sorta free discussion as much as possible, but I do want to limit our time on each topic, in case people need to leave early.

Note: If you do have a sewing machine, please bring it to help learn how to use and experiment with it.

As this is a basic cosplay 101 panel, we are going to learn about:

1) How to start your cosplay by using references, brainstorming and planning, listing out materials, and etc.
2) What supplies and materials work best for some or most cosplays and how much you are willing to spend.
3) Thrift store shopping and the pros and cons.
4) Drafting and using patterns.
5) How to prepare your fabric before sewing it with pre-washing and ironing.
6) The workings of a sewing machine and how to use it.
7) How to handle and cut wigs.
8) The basics of makeup (if we have time).
9) The basics of small props (if we have time).

Please make sure that if you RSVP that you will be able to attend, since space is limited.

Make sure to park at Major's lane. To find it, drive past the destination and make an immediate left into Major's Lane. You can park on either side, near the elementary school.

Sorry to cancel at the last minute, but it seems I've caught a cold. Hopefully this is still enough notice for someone on the waitlist to take my place!

maybe you should host a second meetup with the same topics for those on the waitlist. interest seems high!!

Hey Shawn, there are 20 people. I suggest we divide the group into two sessions to accommodate the good turnout.

Sorry, but right now I'm having some family problems. I dunno if I'll be in the mood for this, but we'll see in an hour.

I'm gonna have to reschedule for a better time. I'm sorry to inconvenience everyone, but the problem is still persisting and I'm exhausted from it.

I hope you feel better! I'd offer to have it at my place today but my husband is hosting a Warhammer game, which takes up lots of table space.

Going to have to bow out of this due to the weather and the distance I'm going to have to travel. Have fun!

Marcella, if you'd like to get together before this meetup to talk about how I can help present things, just let me know. If you prefer to take the lead and just want me to show up with my sewing machine and some extra fabric, that's fine too. I can try to keep the weekend of December 7th for planning if you want.

If you don't mind travelling, Carroll libraries are free if you indicate you are non-profit.

Well, this was scheduled for the day of the next Dine out that I posted 5 days ago, so I guess I'm out.

Sorry, I forgot to look at suggested meetup completely. I changed the date.

      No worries :3

      October 13, 2013

  • Marcella K.

I hope this date is okay for most or all of you. If half of you aren't able to, then I will change it.

    October 12, 2013

I make props. Some basic some more advanced. Let me know when and where you all want to do this.

    October 9, 2013

    • Marcella K.

I definitely would need some input for props, as I'm not an expert on that. Also, I'm thinking around November before Thanksgiving vacation would be the best time. I'm pretty booked for October weekends. As for a place, does anyone have a suggestion?

      October 10, 2013

  • Ed M.

Bringing my daughters. Since date and place haven't been decided, might have to bow out when that's set.

Yes! I am really looking forward to this. I have some experience with sewing costumes from scratch, but haven't been doing much lately. It would be great to be around others who are which might be the kick start I need.

Right now I work nights 6pm-6am, I have only sewn one thing so far, most the stuff i've done is with tape and glue, I'd really like to learn how to sew properly and efficiently.
