The Bluegrass Slow Jam

*Thanks to Steve Duggan and the gang at Paddy's for making this jam possible.

Hello fellow jammers! Welcome to the NYC Bluegrass Slowjam, which I created in early 2008. Here's why I embarked on this effort: there are several bluegrass jams across the city and certainly new (or more beginning) players are welcome to come to them. But generally if we come at all, we hang out in the back doing our best to figure out what's going on and trying not to be heard. Obviously, this is what newer players are supposed to do at jams -- it's proper etiquette. That's why we needed to create a special forum that caters to a more beginning and intermediate level of player. To my knowledge, none existed in the city at the time, so I created one in 2008 hoping that that people would come. And indeed they did!! As of today we have over 500 members and the jam has met consistently (over 100 times) since we began.

Once the closet pickers come out of the closet and enter the world of the jam they are amazed at how much better their playing gets. People are also surprised to learn that the skills needed for jamming are really different than those used behind closed doors in your home or apartment. You gotta think on your feet, learn to hear your chord changes, learn to improvise, and when you're ready, learn how to lead a song.

Jam Format: We have a jam leader at each of our jams who facilitates the evening and keeps us moving. Each of our rotating jam leaders has at least two decades of experience leading or participating in high level jams and has a wide-ranging repertoire. There is a $5.00 fee to participate in the jam and I use these funds to pay a the jam leaders. If you want more info about the jam leaders you can find them in the "pages" section of the website.

If you have questions, e-mail me. See you at the next jam!!

Update: Since the inception of the jam people have gotten much better. It just happened! So now the jam is less a "slow jam" and more a "slow-ish" jam. New players are always welcome and will surely be inspired and encouraged. I remain dedicated to making this jam a comfortable and fun place for newer players.
