Sun., 3/24/13: Sunol Valley 18 Holes

Updated on Monday, March 18th:

We are changing from the Cypress to the Palm Course because the former course is being aerated.

Our tee times under "Lucy Kim" now begin at 8:59 a.m. Let's meet outside the pro shop by 8:40 a.m.

Their regular green fee is $57, but they are giving us all the Club Member rate of $52, which includes the cart.

To see the scorecard, click on the below link, scroll to the bottom and click on the Palm Course scorecard:

http://www.sunolvalley.com/golf-and-tournaments/

Sunol Valley doesn't have a driving range on its premise, but there is one 2 minutes away across the street. As you are approaching the golf course, if the entrance to Sunol Valley is to your left, the driving range is to your right, next to the gas station.

Buckets of balls: 105 = $8; 70 = $7; 35 = $5.

LMAO!!!! Regarding the very newly-formed Master Blaster Club, I forgot to add PB (Mike G), and it was suggested that included should be honorary BABGMGroup member Anthony, who had 300+ yard drives yesterday, and Ricky who I'm told can consistently crush 'em over 300 yards.

I am with Mike G. (PB) on this one............not quite there yet

Seriously I don't think any of us in this group are consistent enough to carry that title! We get lucky once in a while when all the stars align but that just it, when ALL the stars align!

Wow, today was amazing . . . what a great bunch o' boys and girls y'all are. We kept good pace; not a peep from the marshals. Everyone seemed to be having a great time; I know I did! I can't wait to see you guys again soon!

By the way, I'm back in love with my 3-wood, and we have 3 more members who need to be inducted into the Master Blaster Club: Mark, Larry and Ms. Roni, who were crushing their drives like crazy on many of the holes! Wow, it was really fun to watch them in action. Way to go!

I decided to do the group assignments a bit earlier this time, fully aware that there will be some changes closer to the date of the outing. I did 4 different variations of the teams; this seems to work the best:

8:59 a.m.: Akira, Sarah, Ricky, Lorna
    9:08 a.m.: R.J., Katie, Kiet, Lee
    9:17 a.m.: Mike, Mike's guest, Bill H.
    9:26 a.m.: Bill C, Stacey, Dean, Scott
9:35 a.m.: Larry, Sally, Mark, Kelli
    9:44 a.m.: Lucy, Ernie, Veronica

To avoid checking out too many carts then stressfully consolidating at the last minute, players #1 and #3 on each team check out the cart and ride with the person to their right.

If you're responsible for checking out the cart, please be at the pro shop at least 20 minutes before you tee off so that your riding partner can get his/her stuff on the cart--don't be at the driving range until just a few minutes before you tee off. Thanks!

There will be a battle of the Master Blasters on team #2, LOL. I can't wait to hear the stories!

I guess I will have to do a lot of "pick up" just to keep up..I'm one of those that rides with a blue flag...I'm still going.

      March 20, 2013

    • Lucy

You finish a round between 90 and 100 (handicap of 22). Many of the attendees fall in that category, so you're in good company. If it looks like we might finish a hole over double par, yes, we should pick up our ball.

I'm in communication with The Presidio to have a meetup there, and their tournament director sent me a bunch of stuff including info about how they keep the course on time (pace of play). I think everyone on this list should read the below link because I foresee issues with speed of play:

    https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=9c3a8e8ae7&view=att&th=13d7f9ea182c4932&attid=0.7&disp=inline&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P_4h9XKN1rlL71KAa1nhrBg&sadet=1363660481813&sads=h_NlpVR2rJ7FJJdOq9IbS3INHag&sadssc=1

My goodness, Lucy. When I read the word, "Presidio" , I thought we're going to jail for those of us who are having triple boogies. ...and putting 5 times in the green. ..and thought bunker shots means sun bathing in Hawaii. ..

Uhmmmmm, some of us SHOULD be arrested, because some of the things we do out there on a golf course is criminal, to say the least. Hahahahahaha!

  • Lucy

I just got off the phone with Sunol Valley. When I reminded them about the possible slow play, they said they will have special tee boxes for the women--they'll move the red tees up even closer to the green. I had actually called to see about splitting up the group: half on the Palm, the others on Cypress, but Rich said the Cypress would be too bumpy and said the special tees would be a better solution. I still request we pick up our ball on tougher holes--even the men (and you know that I know who you are, LOL).

The Palm Course will be really busy on Sunday since most golfers will not be playing the Cypress Course.

Lucy, if you think Sunol Palm course is a challenge, The Bridges is much more challenging, with a slope of 139 from the white tees, whereas at Palm it is 120. In my opinion, The Bridges is one of the most challenging courses in the bay area.

    March 18, 2013

    • Lucy

Thanks, Bill. Yes, that's why I posted that The Bridges will be the most difficult course we have golfed. And that's the reason I have asked 3 of our members to join us for other 18-hole events, not The Bridges event. I believe there were no hard feelings. There are a few golfers on this Sunol list who are still "beginners." I have already given my warning a few times, but if they insist on playing, I hope they won't be hurt when they are asked to speed up play by their teammates or the marshals.

I'll hit the driving range this week, this will be my 1st round of golf in 4 years, but I'm so ready to get back into this game and don't worry I have no problem picking up my ball! LOL...

    March 18, 2013

    • Lucy

Thanks, Kelli. A reminder to our slower players: Please pick up your ball if you're having a tough hole. The Palm Course is very long: 6442 yards off the whites and 6100 from the red tees. I've golfed The Palm 3 times and finished around an embarrassing 120 each time from the white tees. I have recently begun to play from the red tees on longer courses, and my putting has drastically improved in the last few weeks and my chipping has improved since the last time I golfed The Palm (last August), so I think I'll fare better this time.

      March 18, 2013

  • Lucy

Aaaarrrrggghhhh! They made a mistake on the tee time. We tee off beginning at 8:59 a.m.; our last tee time is 9:44 a.m.

Please update your RSVP because I will post the group assignments as well as who's riding with whom in a few days. I don't want to keep making changes to the line-up, so if there's even a slight chance you might not make it, please change your RSVP to "no," thanks.

Also, email or text me if you prefer to tee off first, because like I said, once I do the group assignments, I do not want to make any changes.

Is Cypress the outside or inside course?

    March 8, 2013

    • Lucy

      Outside.

A word of caution: Sunol is not the easiest course to golf. If you struggle playing a 9-hole course, you'll find Sunol very difficult. Therefore, if you've never golfed Sunol before or are not accustomed to golfing 18-hole courses on a regular basis, I suggest you consider joining us on an easier course.

However, if you're stubborn and still want to golf Sunol 'cuz it looks soooooo purdy (and it is!), please be conscientious and pick up your ball if you're struggling on certain holes. The marshals there are very vigilant, and it's not fun having them repeatedly telling you to speed up your play. A rule some of us go by is (par x 2) + 2. i.e., if a hole is par 4, then the max # of strokes you should take = 10. If you cannot finish the hole within 10 strokes, please pick up your ball. If it appears that you might have to use this rule on many of the holes, it might be a good idea to just tee off on the longer par 4s or par 5 holes then putt out (skip the approach shots).

    • Lucy

LMAO, you guys are cracking me up! If you guys really, really want to golf Sunol, please do. Just remember that if you are closer to the novice level than most of our members on the list (or are rusty/don't go out much), there is no shame in picking up your ball and not finishing a few holes if you are having a tough time on some. I suck at golf, and our members see me pick up my ball every once in a while. I've even skipped holes (mostly to chow down . . . oink!) when I thought I might be slowing down play. If you haven't met me, don't think I'm a mean person. If I sound stern at times, it's because I respect and love the game so much and always try to make the outings as fun and stress-free as possible for everyone (us, them, the golf course staff). I hope this clears up any misconceptions.

I totally agree with both your comments, and I thank you for mentioning etiquette during play. I have more than once stood on a tee waiting for the group ahead playing as if they were the only people playing. I hope everyone becomes familiar with the guidelines. Don't forget that some courses have marshals that can help out when faced with lack of proper play. thanks again Lucy

I visited Sunol Valley this afternoon to pick up the stuff they are donating to our 3-Club tourney, and the course is as beautiful as I remembered it.

I had a couple more tee times added, and because this is a larger group, if you end up in a later foursome, you don't have to meet us at 9:45 a.m. However, we'll have to coordinate who's riding with whom so that we don't have too many carts checked out (we sometimes scramble just before tee time to consolidate, LOL).

I will post the group assignments a few days before, as well as email my phone #.

Thanks Lucy for adding me to the list

I heard Cypress is a nicer golf course than Palm in Sunol....

    February 10, 2013

    • Lucy

"Nicer" is relative. I personally prefer Cypress, because it's narrower and trickier, therefore more fun. The Palm is WIDE and longer. I golfed Sunol nine times between July and October of 2012. I have great memories of golfing both courses with our members (lots of laughs).

      February 10, 2013

    • Lucy

I took both of those above photos the last time we golfed Sunol's Palm Course. In the bottom photo are Dee and Peggy. "Nice" course, right? It's a beautiful course but it kicked everyone's butt. That's the day R.J. crushed a 340-yard drive! Noel, Mike and I were there to witness it. Our Kiet broke that record on the par-6 18th hole at Lake Chabot. I forget the yardage, but Ranger Mark was hanging around me, R.J., Noel and Mike to witness that. It was amazing!
