Sat., 6/29/13: Back to Pacific Grove

I wanted to golf a very special place before I took off for a one-week vacation (going golfing in hot & humid Chicago).

The Golf Channel named Pacific Grove Muni as one of the "Top 5 Hidden Gems" on the Monterey Peninsula. Golf Digest named this course "One of the Most Fun Golf Courses," and GolfWeek said that it's one of the best municipal golf courses.

Pacific Grove is one of the top 5 favorites of our members, and trust me, we've golfed a whole lotta nice places. The back nine runs along Pacific Ocean, and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Booked under "Lucy Kim," our tee times begin at 12:20 p.m. (this was the earliest time I could reserve for this date).  Let's meet by the pro shop; I'll specify the time we need to meet by, depending on how many players and cart assignments, etc.

The rate is $52 + $16 = $68

Here's the scorecard:

What an amazingly gorgeous day! It was horrifically hot all over the Bay Area, so the sojourn to Pacific Grove was an extra-nice escape. If you check out the photos, you'll notice that there was not a single cloud in the sky. I'm being asked what that goopy thing in the photo is. Tim, Noel and I ate at the Red House Cafe, and I had ordered the Camembert with Port and fig reduction sauce with blue cheese crumbles for dinner. It was incredibly good!

I'm scheduling another PacGrove meetup toward the end of August, so those who were not able to join us this time can do so.

Does it mean another breakfast in Pebble beach again?

    • Lucy

Either breakfast at Pebble Beach or dinner at Red House Cafe or BOTH!

After a 3 hour car trip, had a great day of golf. No warm clothes needed and we finished around 7:30ish. Didn't lose my pitching wedge......until hole#8.

I think its going to be a beautiful day, but be prepared with warm clothes just in case. You never know on the coast.

Here are the groups. The 1st and 3rd person will check out the cart and ride with the golfer to their right:

    Group1: Kevin/Teri, Bill
    Group2: Noel/Lucy, R.J./Tim

Yesterday, the front nine was warm and sunny; the back nine was chilly and somewhat foggy. I'm guessing the weather will be similar; therefore, make sure to bring a jacket.

The course is walkable, but I don't recommend it for this weekend, because it'll be a super-busy day. Get ready to play speed golf . . . If you've never played Pacific Grove Golf Links before, you're in for a treat. I know I just golfed there, but I can't wait to go back!

Lucy, how challenge is this course? Thx.

Pacific Grove has a slope rating of 116 (average difficulty is 113). Of the 18-hole courses our group has golfed, Pacific Grove is comparable to Sunol Valley's Cypress Course (slope of 117), Willow Park (118), and Lake Chabot (116).

The weather can make it challenging, and some of the fairways are a bit narrow. Like in the 3rd photo above where Henry's standing, many a balls have been lost in that "stuff" behind him. I played PacGrove twice in August of last year. Even though I was still very rusty, I shot about 115 both times. I expect to do a heck of a lot better this time around. (Like you) I had problems chipping at the time.

Unless you've been practicing your chip shots, I think you'd benefit from visiting the driving range before you play PacGrove. With that said, I think you'll do fine at PG. Join us if you'd like. It's a beautiful course.

As I had said above, I expected to play better today, and I did: I shot a 100. That's 15 strokes better than one year ago! Thanks for the coaching, Ted.

I've had my new clubs for exactly one week, so I'm still getting used to them (unsure about the distances of each club).

I had such a great time today, and I can hardly wait to go back on Saturday!

If you're an NCGA member, flash them your membership card for a discount on the green fee. Today (Wednesday), instead of the $62 fee, it was only $55 for us members. I forgot to ask how much of a discount we'll get on Saturday, but it's going to be at least $7.

The last time we golfed Pacific Grove, I had posted a warning a couple times--as well as told our golfers in person before we teed off--that little critters will steal your food, especially on the back nine if you don't hide your food. Even the marshals warn you at the 9th hole about hiding your food.

Yet, one member buys a $10 sandwich at the turn, leaves it on his seat and a bird flies off with it. Another member had her bag of almonds taken by a bird also.

The squirrels are super-aggressive, too. Sooooo, hide your food when you leave your cart to hit your ball.

Hello, Mayumi, welcome. I read your profile and you say you have no golf experience and that you read and understand what is written in the "About Us" section of our site.

I am changing your RSVP to "No" for this meetup and for the other Pacific Grove meetup, because this golf course is not for novice golfers.

Our meetup group is geared towards getting new golfers (who have some experience or have had lessons) out on the golf course.

Please re-read "About Us," and perhaps you can join us for one of our group lessons. Also, please become familiar with the basic golf etiquette. I found a good one for you:

Mayumi, I just sent you an email. Please do not change your RSVP again. I am changing it back to "No."

Lucy, I would love to RSVP yet I need to follow someone driving over to Pacific Grove coz I might end up going to New York instead....(~_~)... I haven't driven towards that area by myself....I absolutely need ample time to drive there free from stress and enjoy....

The last time, I arranged a carpool. A couple others followed us in their own cars (a caravan). We will do the same thing this time, but I don't think we'll have as many people. Let's chat more about this next week.

Yes, it can get windy there. We golfed in July and also in August, and if you check out the photos, you can see how cold it might be (although some of our hot-blooded members are wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts). Here's the link:

I have played this course and enjoyed it.
I hope we could do this again or on a different date.
I would love to join you this time but I will be in Italy. Have fun in Chicago, Lucy.

Lucy, it sounds like you're getting closer to book a meet up day in Pebble Beach....I will need another round of 25 lessons then.....(~_~)
