Friday night, 8/9/13: Potluck BBQ, driving range & contests

Spend a fun Friday evening with your golf meetup pals.  Fremont Park will close their short-game area to the public so that we can have it all to ourselves.

We'll have chipping and putting games/contests, you can hit balls (you purchase your own golf balls), and we will have the grill going.

Because there's a fee to use the facilities, we need to charge a nominal fee to our attendees:  $7/person.

We can hang out at Fremont Park until 10:00 p.m., so if you can't arrive by 6:30, come when you can.

Please post a comment or email me (Lucy) about what you'd like to bring for the potluck BBQ.

I am really looking forward to this.  Feel free to bring friends and lots of beer!

Lucy or whoever: I had a thought. Would anyone want to "Meetup" somewhere at a sports bar during some of the upcoming football games i.e. like the 49'er games?? Lots of fun!! I know that Stuart is a 49'er fan and I'm a BIG fan. Any other 49'er fans out there?

What an awesome and fun group! I guess that's no surprise when you bring people together that have a love/hate relationship with golf! It is a 4 letter word after all LOL! Thank you Lucy and everyone for setting this up. We had such a great time and look forward to playing/hacking with everyone! :)

Again, thank you all for a fun event, specially to Lucy, Stuart, Brian, Will, Arecelli and Ernie.
It was a lot of fun.

Everyone loved Chris' mom's desserts, so I'd like to post info about it. The goodies came from his mom's shoppe called Gracie's Delectables on Laurel Street in San Carlos. The menu looks really great, and I'm told that her turkey sandwiches are incredible: She roasts the turkey everyday and goes through about 15 of them per day.

    Here's her menu:

I have to say that the "everything" thingy (I forgot what it's called) is one of the best desserts I've ever had. I hope you guys stop by the deli to try it yourself.

I had such a wonderful time! It was really fun seeing our regulars and super-nice meeting our newbies.

Thank you, everyone, for bringing all the yummy food, the drinks and the items we needed to make our first BBQ a success!

A huge thank you to Stuart for bringing all the equipment, grilling and for bartending. You are awesome!

Per many of your requests, we will try to have another BBQ before the restaurant at Fremont Park opens and we will no longer have access to the patio.

    What a great evening!

Potluck was great - tons of really good food - thanks also to Stuart the master griller!, contests were fun but would have been better if we started earlier while still lighter.

I agree. The games were set up by 5:00 p.m., and Brian, Araceli and Will were back in the short game area before 7:00 p.m. waiting for everyone to play the games. I kept encouraging everyone to go back there, but everyone was having too great of a time hanging out and socializing and eating, LOL. Next time, let's play the games first, THEN eat.

Thanks to Brian for setting up the games and thanks to him, Araceli and Will for overseeing the games, and to Ernie for bringing the toys for the mini-golf.

Congrats to Miniature Golf Champ Will for winning our putting contest. Warren trailed Will by one measly point!

There was a 4-way tie for the chipping-pitching contest: Marcelina, Will, Brian MT, and Warren. Good job, All!

We have a very nice menu! The problem with potlucks, in my opinion, is that there's always waaaaay too much food, which ends up going to waste. Ours is perfect--the variety and the amount.

In case anyone's wondering why not everyone is bringing food, it's because those members are bringing items I specifically requested.

Any last-minute RSVPers can bring wine, beer or dessert. Or if you're not able to come for the entire event, stop by anyway and meet some of your golfmates.

Yay! Gene just got back from Chicago, so I RSVPed for him. He'll bring something to share, but not sure what yet. I gave him some suggestions.

Thanks a bunch, Max! Max will stop by around 7:00 on his way to dinner in Santana Row and bring us a couple of broasted chicken. I'll bring a knife, some potato salad, a corkscrew, and plastic glasses for wine.

It'll be very cold in the evening, so make sure you bring a warm jacket or sweatshirt.

I'lll have the check-in desk by the patio and will be there to greet you and to collect the $7 cover charge. If you're able to, it'd be cool if you could bring exact change, thanks.

When you check in, I'll give you a name tag & a $10 GolfSmith voucher and to let you know where everything is.

Newbies, don't be too nervous. As I had mentioned on another post, this is a very friendly group and not clique-y, so you'll all have a great time meeting everyone.

    - The light from the driving range will be bright enough to light the patio area after it gets dark.
    - They'll run an extension cord from the inside to where we will be.
    - If you're planning to hit balls, I think the last call for the balls is 9:30.
    - We need to be out of there by 10:00 p.m., but let's shoot for 9:45 p.m.
    - I'll email you my phone # in a couple of days in case you need to reach me that day. Please update your RSVP ASAP, thanks.

OMG, what a hoot!!! This evening, Brian, Araceli & I worked on the chipping and putting games and had a blast!

ANYONE (novice/beginners, too!) can do this. For putting, Brian created a small miniature golf on the green. And to test our chipping skill, he created this:

There will be 8 quadrants, each with a different point value. You will be given 6 golf balls to chip from 2 areas. If your ball lands in the section that has a value of 8 points, then you have 8 points, etc. Whoever gets 21 points or closest to 21 points without going over wins. If you'd like to do a double-or-nothing, you will be given 4 more balls to better or equal your previous score. If you end up with a lower score on your second round, then too bad!

Pitching Wedges, putters & golf balls will be provided, so you don't have to bring your own. David and other lefties, I'm sure Max will be okay with you borrowing his lefty PW. I KNOW FOR A FACT that THAT particular club will be there on Friday. Hahahahahaha!

Once a few more members tell me what they're bringing, I'll post the items so that you guys will have simple list to look at at your fingertips.

Also, GolfSmith in Dublin is donating a bunch of $10 giftcards (good for purchases over $20 at any GolfSmith location), so I will give each of you one of those. Those giftcards will also be given to the winners of our shortgame contests.

    August 2, 2013

    • Lucy

Darn! Before a grueling golf lesson with The Caddie this afternoon, he drove me to GolfSmith to pick up the $10 giftcards. Those now say they are good for purchases over $30--no longer $20! That's all right. GolfSmith gave me 40 of them. So, each attendee will receive one "giftcard," and winners of each contest/game will receive 2 of them. They expire 12/31/13.

This might be dorky, but I'm thinking about name tags with our first names, the city we live in and a number to represent the # of meetups we participated in.

This way, the veterans can welcome and hang out with our first-timers.

New members, I promise, this is not a clique-y group; everyone is VERY FRIENDLY AND WELCOMING.

Unless you want to hit balls at the driving range, you won't need your whole set of clubs--only a club to chip with and your putter.

If the novice golfers don't have clubs yet, don't worry, you can borrow someone else's for the games/contests.

The games/contests will be fun and ANYONE (regardless of your skill level or experience) will be able to play.
