Mare Island GC is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. The course opened in 1892, and has had several route changes over the years as various parts of it were repurposed during the world wars. The current layout is an interesting mix: the front 9 is an open woodlands course, the back nine is more of a links-style layout.
Who should play here: If you're playing from the whites, you should be able to reliably fly your drives longer than 130 yards or you're going to lose a lot of balls. This course has a lot of forced carries, notably the 130-yard carry over water on the 205y par 3 8th hole. There's lots of waste areas to carry on the back nine as well. The red tees are almost always after forced carries, however.
