Fri., 4/11/14: Bowling, Pool & Karaoke Night: Isn't this a GOLF meetup?

I did a site visit today and here’s what I found out:

Friday evenings are very busy.  At 7:30 p.m., all lanes close to the public because there’s a bowling league event until 9:00 p.m.

It’s really busy around 6:30 p.m., so if we purchase a few of the one-hour vouchers for $19 and try to get 3 lanes, then we most likely won’t get lanes.

The manager suggested getting the 2-hour special for $29.  This way, a few of us can arrive at 5:30 and bowl, then let the 6:30-arrivers bowl when they get there.

If we do it that way, 2 of us will purchase the $29 voucher.  The math will change when the RSVPs change, but let’s say we end up with 16 attendees:

$29 x 2 vouchers = $58 divided by 16 people = $3.625 per person.

Shoe rental is $4.00 extra per person.  Four pairs of shoes are included with the 2 vouchers.

I’m making an executive decision and saying that the first four Event Hosts/Organizers who RSVP will get a free shoe rental.  As of this writing, the lucky money-savers are Brian, Stuart and myself.  Let’s call this our annual bonus.

Regarding after the bowling, we can eat greasy bar food and shoot pool.

Homestead Bowl’s X Bar only has 2 pool tables.  At 9:00 p.m. every Friday, there’s a pool tournament.  Tournament participants arrive around 7:00-7:30 to practice ON BOTH TABLES until their tournament starts.  About this, I said, “That’s not cool.” After bugging them a bit, they agreed to let us have one of the pool tables until 9:00 p.m.

Also, there will be tables set up for the pool tournament participants, which we can share until 9:00 p.m.

At 9:00 p.m., Karaoke begins.  We can stay and sing, or make fun of  our members who attempt to Karaoke, or go home and get ready for the next day’s golf outing.

Also at 9:00 p.m., 10 bowling lanes open up to the public, so anyone interested in bowling later can do so.

Lots of fun. Bowling was a rude awakening after not playing for many years. Playing pool was fun as well and I might just get the bug to play more. Maybe we can do a Pool Meetup somewhere????????????? Anyone interested?????

Had fun bowling, shooting pool even though I eliminated myself out of the tournament by kicking the 8 ball in after a great cut, and singing a couple tunes at karaoke. . People all nice as usual.

It was a lot of fun even though I haven't bowl in a long time.

We have Lane 31, which is to your far right. Brian, Jeanne and I are here. We have this lane from 5:15 to 7:15. We will then mosey on over to the X Bar.

Had to run home for phone I forgot. Will be there in 10

      April 11, 2014

  • Christopher D

There's a good chance I can get there by 5:30. See you then.

I think we'll be fine with the $29 two-hour voucher I purchased. Michele and her guest will be late so will be skipping the bowling portion of this meetup (they'll join us for the rest of the fun events). This leaves 12 people bowling. Perfect!

I'm not sure what time Brian is arriving, but I'll take one of the free pairs of shoes and I'll let Stuart have the other free rental because he'll be there early.

$29 divided by 12 people = $2.40/per person. I'll be collecting $3.00 from those who are bowling.

    See you guys there!

Woke up earlier not feeling well. Hope I'm better later. If I'm not there by 5:30/6 you'll know why. Roxanne

We cannot combine vouchers, so I'll buy the two-hour $29 one.

Once a few of us arrive, let's see how busy it really is. Then one of us can get a lane for $31.99 around 6:00-ish.

Once I get there, I'll post a comment about which lane/area we're assembling around.

    April 10, 2014

    • Lucy

Since we cannot use more than one voucher, we only get 2 free shoe rentals. But the math works out to be about the same. Therefore, everyone will chip in about $4. We'll figure this thing out once we get there.

Damn! I like to do both but I have to work this Friday night. I sing as good as I play golf..'nuff said. LOL!

OMG, it would be soooo totally fun to watch you ATTEMPT to crank out a tune . . . I hear you're related to William Hong.

LOL! I taught him everything he knows. She BANGS!!

  • Roxanne

Hi Lucy: Thanks for scoping things out. So who will buy the vouchers? Who will bowl first and who second?

    April 8, 2014

    • Lucy

So far, it looks like only Jeanne, Stuart and I are able to make it by 5:30.

      April 9, 2014

    • Roxanne

I can also make the 5:30.

I have a gig that night. I'd love to join, especially karaoke!

    April 8, 2014

    • Lucy

Because we have many Karaoke lovers in our group, we'll do a separate "Karaoke Night: Isn't This a Friggin' GOLF Meetup?!" event. Maybe a Friday night in May. I'll run a couple of dates by you and my buddy Toni before I schedule the meetup.

Great question, Roxanne. Let's get a list going:

Who's able to arrive by 5:15 and who can't arrive until about 6:00ish?

Two of the people who are able to arrive at 5:30 should purchase the voucher. I can buy one, because I plan to arrive around 5:00 p.m. To beat the Friday traffic, I plan to already be in Cupertino waaaaayyyy in advance. Am even considering golfing Sunken Gardens or going there to hit some balls around 3:00 p.m.

    • Lucy

Not golf in shifts, LOL; bowl in shifts.

      April 9, 2014

    • Lucy

I just re-read Stuart's below post and he is correct, we cannot combine vouchers. We can only get one voucher and the 2nd lane is $31.99/hour.

      April 9, 2014

  • Jeanne

I could I pass up the opportunity to wear rental shoes!

    1 · April 8, 2014

    • Lucy

I've always wanted to be in someone else's shoes. I don't think anyone would want to be in my shoes, literally and figuratively.

I woukd verify details fyi. It looks like you can't combine vouchers for groups of 7 plus. You might check out moonlight lanes in Santa Clara. There is a groupon for them also. I believe it is $42 for 2 hours for 6 people. I did not see a restriction on combining. Also fyi homestead bar sounds allot more exciting than it actually is.

    • Christopher D

I concur with Stuarts opinion of the Bar. I've played there twice and never used it.

So, Caddie and I visited Homestead Bowl today. This place is a total dive--especially the bar-- but I LOVE THE PLACE!!!!!!!!

      April 7, 2014

  • Paul

How many lanes are we getting because the pass seems to cover up to 6 people a lane. We can probably get in 2 maybe 3 games in an hour with 4 people a lane

    April 6, 2014

    • Lucy

Thanks for that info. It sounds like a great plan. I'm going to drag Ted over to Deep Cliff tomorrow and on the way home, we'll stop by Homestead Bowl to scope out that place to figure out what exactly we'll do.

I'll post a trip report after the site visit.

      April 6, 2014

    • Christopher D

I've bowled there with a local meetup on Monday's @9:00 PM. 4 per lane $2.00/game. But might be busier on Friday's.

      April 6, 2014

  • Roxanne

Since the information on the voucher you mentioned was not clear to me I contacted the bowling alley and the $19 vouchers are not used one per person. They are used for 6 people/group. I would suggest Lucy that you call them for clarification. They did say they have a party package something like $11 per person for 1 hour of bowling for 6 people on each lane.
