Loch Lomond Marina to Red Rock

I put this paddle to Red Rock out on the discussion board but thought I'd formally post this to see if anyone might be interested. Red Rock is that tiny little island half way between San Rafael and Richmond next to the bridge. The plan would be to launch from Loch Lomond Marina in San Rafael (into an ebb) and paddle out past the Marin Islands, under the bridge, then to Red Rock. At Red Rock we can have lunch and explore "the cave". On our way back (Flood), we can paddle out to the two brothers and check out the light house before heading back. Tides and currents look reasonable but I'm not sure yet about the weather/wind. I would need to check that again when we got closer. Should have self rescue skills, open bay experience and be dressed for immersion. Straight there and back would be approx. 8.5 miles and if we went out to the two brothers on our way back, it would be just under 10. Significant wind would cancel.

I'm a maybe. Sure would be nicer if the launch site was from Richmond (Ferry Point, Richmond Marina?), maybe same trip different launch on another day?

It was a very well planned route and nice location to launch from (market right there to pick up last minute lunch) and not really that far from Richmond, just the toll$.

Awesome day on the Bay everyone. Great to meet you Peter and Jomar, great to see you again Bert and Susan. As we were passing the Brother islands, I could barely make out someone talking on the VHF radio. I think they were saying "those kayakers look like they are having way too much fun out there". Must have been the guys in the Coast Guard helicopter…
Regarding the coveted forward seat on Peter's boat, I think a drawing of some sort is in order! If I win, I'll even stock the ice chest!

Great Day on the bay! It was great paddling with all of you and I hope to get back out on the water with you soon! Jomar, instead of telling your wife "almost", you get to tell her, "I did!" Susan, Ken, always great paddling with you. Peter, after today Im seriously thinking about leaving the boat at home on the next next paddle and occupying that forward seat (next to the ice chest)! you looked like you we're having a great time out there running laps around us.

Ha ha! I'll have to stock it properly next time!-)

Nice paddle with tides, currents and weather being just perfect for the group. We all had a bite to eat on the island, quickly visited the cave on the west side, then headed to the two brothers. 5 islands were visited for a total of just over 10 miles.

That was an awesome trip and and a bonus experience! Thank you Bert for the lead and it was great meeting Susan and Ken for the first time. Peter that was an awesome ride on your pontoons which ended on a nice capsize on my part hahaha! Thank you to all of you for the great rescue! That was a good learning experience for me.

So sorry to have to miss this paddle in my own backyard! Again with too much work. This nonsense is getting very old very fast. I hope everybody had a terrific time.

I checked the weather this am. Mostly sunny today with SSW winds between 5-11 kts. See you at Loch Lomond. I have a red truck with white kayak.

Can I be a strong maybe? Sounds like a fun day. What's the estimated return time? i.e., arrival back at car?

    November 8, 2013

    • bert

I'd like to shoot for being back 2:30-3:00 at the very latest. The factors are the overall speed of the group and conditions. As of right now, conditions look favorable! A strong maybe will work but I hope you can make it!

I might be able to make it. I'm out of town until late Saturday so I'll have to decide if I'm going to be sleeping in. I like that particular paddle (unless it's windy). So….keep me posted! Thanks!

There has been a few good questions asked from different people so I thought that I would consolidate the responses into one post.

    Loch Lomond Marina:
From the main road you will go into the Loch Lomond parking lot then veer left (heading east) on the service road. Follow the road all the way to the end of the parking lot and park. You should be at the far East end of the marina. Past the end of the road down to the right, there is a place to put in. Meeting: 9:30AM , OTW by 10:30AM

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOAA/National Weather Service Marine Forecast (As of Friday am)

Sunday Night: SW wind around 7 kt. Mostly cloudy.

      Paddle Out:
Once we leave the Marina, we will first paddle by the Marin Islands. The Marin Islands, located south west of the Loch Lomond Marina (1.2 miles), are apart of the National wildlife Refuge in San Pablo Bay. There are two islands (East Marin and West Marin). They were once a vacation retreat but now they are a bird sanctuary. They are closed to the public. From the Marin Islands , we will head south by south west to Red Rock (approx 3.5 miles from the Marin Islands). From what very little I know from various people, it is privately owned and for sale (bring your check book if your interested). No one has been interested due to all the local politics, environmental impacts, building concerns, etc.. On the island there is a cave partially dug into the West Side of the Island that you can walk into. Bring a flashlight if you'd like. Next Post

      Lunch:
We will have lunch at the often seen but rarely sat upon beach at Red Rock. There are no bathroom facilities but plenty of places Paddling Back ( With options): We will be paddling against a 1/2 kt. current on our way back. At this time we will decide to paddle back the way we came or paddle out 2.4 miles north to the islands know as the Two Brothers (The east brother has the light house). From the Brothers, it is about 3 miles back to Loch Lomond. Total miles is about 9.5 to 10 miles. The difference is nominal.

I will check conditions again Saturday, then post. Please email me if you have any questions:

Hi Bert - sounds like a fun paddle, but too short a notice for me, already had plans. You guys have fun...CHEERS!

    Hey everyone,

I'm not familiar with some of the locations mentioned, and was wondering if you could provide a few more details about the location of the islands, the "bridge," and Red Rock. For example, what directions are these from the Marina...what is the direction of the two brothers and the name of the cave. I'm also intrigued about the cave. I'm asking all these details just so that I can get an idea of the route and distance. Thank you for any further information you can provide. Depending on weather, wind, distance, etc., I'd be interested in taking the 11 foot Necky Sport out; it's been too long since I've paddled!

Mag, your boat will be fine for thus paddle with these conditions. I do have a loaner boat a 17" ft. Looksha IV if your interested.

      November 8, 2013

    • MAG

Bert, thank you for all this helpful and interesting information! It looks like my spouse wants to take a well-deserved mini-trip with the Veterans Day holiday, so I won't be able to make this. However, I would be very interested in using your Looksha IV some other time, as I'm considering purchasing another kayak in the next 9-12 months or so, one that is a little longer and sleeker than the Necky Sport. Than you again, and hope you have a great paddle, Bert!

Where in Loch Lomond are we launching? I've read that there is a launch fee if we use the ramp, but supposedly there is none if we go at the east side of the Marina?

As a new member, I have some (maybe stupid) questions. When the paddle is listed, it says the time is PM. Is that a mistake? It must be 9:30 AM right? Also, is the meeting time AND the OTW time announced? I might be able to do the Red Rock paddle this Sunday…..don't know yet.

    1 · November 8, 2013

OK, I've located the two brothers, Red Rock, and the bridge you're referring to! Only location I couldn't find was the lighthouse. Distance looks pretty far to me, so conditions will matter even more. Thank you again!

Hello Mag, the lighthouse is on the east brother.
