Elkhorn Slough Overflow

I'd like to paddle this weekend, too, and the tides look favorable for an MBK launch and return. Anyone who can't get into the main group is welcome to enjoy this wonderful natural habitat from the other end. On the water at 10 (so, briefing at 9:45--I'll be there at about 9:30). We might try to meet up with the main group at some point (VHF Channel 71) (lunch in Rubis Creek, or even further inland?), and there's a steep outbound tide in the afternoon, so we should have a limo ride back to MBK, where we can rinse boats and gear. Wild people might like to go even further and poke their noses out into the bay (twist my arm).

To those that suffer from Hullivator envy, I found this on Craigslist for $300, get it while its lasts, caveat emptor

One caveat on hullivators, earlier models had an issue with the lift system not locking down in the loading position. This could result in a knockout punch to the jaw. Newer models have corrected the problem. Be sure to find our which version you are considering.

Gorgeous day and enjoyable company. We navigated Rubis Creek (fun to look across the top of the pickleweed) and headed up to Kirby Park(ing lot) for lunch. The other KA group stopped to say hello but continued down the slough. We returned on a big tide but also caught a breeze in our faces. More sea otters on the way back. MBK had over 80 rentals today, and there was an REI group out, too. Thank goodness for a lot of territory on the slough.

Hmmm, my earlier comment has disappeared? Annette and I had a great first meetup with you all today! Thanks John and Liz for the intro to life on the water at Elkhorn Slough, and for the extra assistance for us newbies. Bang and Mike, nice to meet you -- looking forward to the next Meetup.

This was a great first paddle on the left coast after 2 years of paddling the Chesapeake. The weather was certainly a change from what I had become accustomed to. I'm looking forward to some more paddling on the Central Coast.

We are a maybe, two of us. Need to move things around a little to make it. We will keep you posted on what we decide. How long do you think the paddle will be? We are trying to make it home for the 49ers game at 3:30!

Sorry we'll need to bow out of this one, as my friend does need to be around to meet her mother's caretaker at 9am. which will be too late for us to get to Monterey. you will have a wonderful day though on the Slough! look forward to seeing the pics.

Sorry to miss you this time, but there will certainly be other Elkhorn outings during the year.

I'll be listening for you on CH 72. We plan to be back at Kirby around 12-12:30pm

    January 18, 2014

    • John M.

I'll be monitoring Ch. 71, so I can stay in touch with MBK. If we head up your way, I can try to reach you on Ch. 72.

I'm bringing a friend and we will be renting a double kayak at MBK. It's her first kayak experience, and my first time at Elkhorn Slough. Looking forward to this! What should we wear? I have a rash guard, PFD and neoprene paddling shorts, but will it be colder? Should we rent wetsuits? Thanks!

Even though there is a low probability of capsizing (no swells or big wind waves), I dress for the water, which is in the high 50s now. I wear farmer johns, with layers on top. I think farmer johns/janes come with the price of a kayak rental, if you're renting from MBK, so you can chat with the staff about their opinions. I've found them very helpful.

I'm in too, catch you at lunch!

    • John M.

Hi Michelle, Can you clarify your message? Should we expect you at MBK at 9:45? Sounds rather like you're hoping to see us at lunch (join our group?). I wouldn't bet the farm that the two groups will get together, though it would be fun. :^)

Would love to go, but still recovering (but getting better!). Have a great time!

Swift recovery, Mark. We'll keep a spot open on the water for you.

I need to take pictures from Kirby Park to the RR bridge for an upcoming presentation, so I'll be at the other end of the slough. Have fun!

Do you have a VHF radio? We can stay in touch during the morning and see where we are, respectively, as we approach Noon.

      January 13, 2014

    • Dana A

No VHF, but I'm guessing you won't miss us unless you don't want to wait around and wish to head back to harbor area. Hmm, set a pirate sail aloft and we'll be sure to notice your group! :>)

John, I'm signed up with the main group, but in the unlikely event you don't get any takers, I'd be delighted to paddle with you starting at MBK. Let me know.

    January 13, 2014

    • Gail G.

Hey John, looks like you've got plenty of company so I'll stick with the Kirby Park group. You'll have to see the horse trick another time. :-)

If things work Sunday, we might get to see you on the water.

Here's the tide forecast for the Hwy 1 bridge:
High Tide: 01/19-12:48 AM (4.04 ft. above MSL)
Low Tide: 01/19-05:54 AM (2.17 ft.)
High Tide: 01/19-11:39 AM (4.53 ft.)
Low Tide: 01/19-06:29 PM (0.29 ft.)

In the "sharks and bat rays" vernacular, this is probably more of a bat rays kind of outing, so renters and inexperienced kayakers are welcome. Be conscious that, while we'll have a point person and sweep, you're responsible for your own safety. Having a buddy is important, so we'll assign them, if you don't come equipped. That also means dressing for the water. Our water temps, amazingly, have been in the high 50s. I'll be wearing farmer johns with my PFD. Bring a lunch.

I think it's a good idea that a separate paddle is planned from other end of ES. If others prefer, go for it. Also, others can rent from there. Looks like the weather will be fine to be on water by 11:00 at Kirby. I saw quite a bit of bird life a couple weeks ago during very high tides.
