Kayak Cleanup at MLK Shoreline in Oakland

Come celebrate Earth Day by paddling around San Leandro Bay and help keep this beautiful area clean by cleaning up trash. We will meet at Tidewater Boating Center at 11am (http://sfbaywatertrail.org/map/tidewater-boating-center/) and be on the water by noon. We provide gloves, pick up sticks, and trash bags. (If someone has an extra sit-on-top we can tow to set trash bags on that would help). We'll paddle along San Leandro Bay (high tide is 10:52), picking up trash along the way. The creeks flowing into San Leandro Bay have been identified as trash "hotspots" and we got a good load out of here for Coastal Cleanup Day. This cleanup is sponsored by the SF Bay Area Water Trail, City of Oakland, and East Bay Regional Park District. Expect to be back around 2. You'll have to bring your own boat.

I'm forwarding a message from Ralph Trujillo, Park Superintendent (we got 300 lbs of trash!):

    Hi Galli,

I wanted to thank you, the Association of Bay Area Government (ABAG) volunteers and Water Trail volunteers for participating on our Earth Day event on April 26, 2014. The Tidewater bank and armor was in need of a good cleanup due to the tides and recent rainstorms that brought the debris from the creeks. The 14 volunteers at Tidewater picked up approximately 300lbs of garbage.

In other events that day, 92 volunteers at Oyster Bay and Martin Luther King Regional Shoreline planted 60 native California trees in four locations. Save the Bay’s 40 volunteers removed approximately 300 lbs. of invasive weeds at East Creek Slough restoration area. We had a total of 146 volunteers that made a difference on Earth Day. I hope we can work together in the future.

Again please forwards my sincere “Thanks” to the ABAG and Water Trail volunteers for their service.

    Ralph

Galli, thanks so much for organizing! It was a great experience for my first event and I would love to do something like this again! Was wondering, maybe we could just keep a stash of those plastic bags, gloves and reachers for our group to use on all of our outings? Thanks again and hope to see you again soon!

I'm glad you had a good experience! I wish we could keep a stash - great idea. But I borrowed this stuff from the City of Oakland. They did offer to lend us this stuff for other cleanup efforts.

Thanks everyone for coming. We did good despite the wind. The Park Superintendent came by at 3, he really wanted to thank you all and was disappointed he missed everyone. He'll send an email out - I'll forward it to the group!

Enjoyed meeting all you 'new' KA members (new to me, anyway) and putting a dent in the trash problem. Galli, thanks for organizing this great event and getting us those sweet goody bags!

Well organized and and being provided with the pick-up tools, garbage bags, latex gloves, etc. made it easy to work. The morning pastries were especially thoughtful.

Hi, I just picked up tools for the cleanup from the City of Oakland (the sponsor) and they gave me bags with bars, tea, and Chinook books to give away at the cleanup. I'm excited to see you all there Sat.!

Should we bring lunch? Or just some energy bars for an on-the-water snack?

    April 21

    • Galli

I would just bring energy bars and eat a late, hearty breakfast. I'll bring a few snacks we can munch on while we set up too.

Regrets. Have a commitment at Summit for The Planet here in Santa Cruz County.
