Mother's Day Kayak at Elkhorn Slough

Elkhorn Slough is one of the best places to kayak on the planet! Marine mammals, birds, and natural beauty abound. Be on the beach in front of Monterey Bay Kayaks at 10:00am READY TO LAUNCH. After a 2-minute briefing we will head out for a leisurely paddle up the slough to a point just past Seal Bend. There we will either pause for lunch, or--if the group so desires--paddle all the way to Kirby Park. Lunch is in the boat or at Kirby Park depending how far the group can paddle against the current. We'll paddle against the tide on the way up and have it easy on the way back. This is an excellent paddle for beginners or experienced kayakers. If you don't own your own kayak you can rent from Monterey Bay Kayaks. It's best to reserve a kayak in advance as they do sell out on nice days. www.montereybaykayaks.com or[masked]-5357. If you are going to rent, please show up at MBK by 9:00am. If you are an absolute beginner, I recommend a sit-on-top kayak, and polyester underclothes. MBK will provide you with a wetsuit, PFD, paddle, and paddle jacket as part of their rental package. A wetsuit is always a good idea when paddling in cold water.

NOTE: We will not wait for stragglers. Please show the group the courtesy of being there on time ready to go. There will be experienced paddlers in this group, or the always friendly and knowledgeable staff of MBK, to help you out.

If you have a marine VHF transceiver, we will be on channel 72.

There is a fee for parking in the Moss Landing Harbor Parking Lot. Get an envelope from the rusty kiosk on the bathroom building, and deposit your parking fee there as well. Note that you need only pay for parking, not launching, as we will not be using the launch ramp.

This event is co-listed with Sloughkeepers so there might be more members going than listed here.

That was a great paddle, already looking forward to the next one. Meetup.com is not uploading photos right now, here is a Picasa link to the pictures:

Thanks, Mike. I hope you get to post these on this site. They're great, and they depict Elkhorn Slough extremely well.

Thanks so much for organizing! We had a great time! Hope we didn't slow your pace down too much...really appreciated all the sweepers! :)

The sweepers enjoyed it, Marthe. It was about being out and enjoying the day, the surroundings, the wildlife and the company. We hope to see you and Fernando many times again.

Also, a terrific organizational and hosting job by Teresa, who also doubled with John as sweep. making sure all went well. Thank you!

The wind looked like it might pick up substantially, so we stopped at the east entrance to Rubis Creek for lunch and then returned. Kirby Park another day. A lovely day, sunny and mild; many egrets, pelicans, harbor seals (mostly sunning on the beaches), cormorants and sea otters; even a flock of geese. Good company; a fun time. Thanks for organizing it and managing us out of the wind's way, Teresa.

Thank-you for a very nice time out paddling.

A beautiful day. Plenty of otters, seals, pelicans, egrets, cranes (I think), and calm going out. Coming back there was some wind, but we had agreed not to go all the way to Kirby Park, so that made the return easier. (Great decision!) Was wonderful to see friends and meet some great new people!

We can adjust distance up the slough to leave us energy for the paddle back. The goal is to enjoy being out there.

P.S.: I'll have a couple of tow lines.

Just a note: Getting over a cold, may turn back at Seal Bend depending on energy, etc. See you tomorrow!

Good news. I would hate to miss yakking with someone who knows who Jim Morrison is.

Weather Underground is predicting 14 kts tomorrow. NWS says 15-25 kts

Lots of wind on Elkhorn Slough today, I estimate 15-25 kts

So we have a decent work-out for tomorrow.

      1 · May 10, 2014

  • John M.

Sunny day expected Sunday. High of 74º. (Not very) high tide at 9:25 a.m., and a low tide at Elkhorn at 2:44 p.m. Probably will be a little breezy in the afternoon, so we'll have some tide with us coming back, but working against the wind.

Looks like I'm not going to make it due to a busy weekend that includes Mama's day. Have fun everyone!

Bummer, but way to manage your priorities. I'll admit to some "Seek withdrawal" symptoms; hope to see you on the water soon.

Just wondering if you think our inflatable kayak would be okay for this one. Thanks!

    May 3, 2014

    • Teresa

Marthe, We have a member named Gail who has an inflatable, and has no problem keeping up. The hope is to move fast enough to make it all the way to Kirby Park. About 7 to 8 miles distance. I say go for it.
