Surf Zone Practice in Monterey Bay

Rescheduling this paddle based on input. This paddle will focus on launching and landing in the surf of Monterey Bay along with re-entry practice. The Del Monte beach is a great place for surf practice, as the intensity varies along the beach so people can find the "best fit" for surf practice. We can be flexible with the date and time, but wanted to at least post as a conversation starter. This paddle is for those who have previously had training on launching and landing in surf, and are looking to practice. No trained instructors will be on-site.

Thanks all for a great day of practicing launching and landing in the surf zone. I now have found a new passion that make west coast kayaking the bomb. The Cape Falcon F1 loves the surf.

Had a chance for lots of practice, since the surf was manageable. We also tried out some new rescues (sit-on-top rescues of closed deck; heel hook rescues), in addition to practicing what we already know. Good skill maintenance session.

It was great to practice our moves and a nice group of people. I hope we do this again. Thanks Jenny for organizing this and thanks Mike for taking pictures!

Great day on the water with plenty of opportunities to practice rescues and finding the right level of surf for practicing. Great group of people to spend a few hours with!

I am interested in going with my assembled folder as single or double if I can share transportation including boat from Berkeley or nearby

R, I see what you mean by the Pakboat assembly...but it definitely looks more sturdy than our AE Convertible. Given your experience with both an AE and a Pakboat, I'd be curious to ask you what's your impressions of the pros/cons of each setup?

I can let you know in detail when we meet in person but basically the XT16 is another class of boat. It takes 20 minutes longer to set up but the build and performance is much closer to a rigid kayak than the AE Conv + Backbone+ Decks. It is also convertible between 1/2 persons. It has a different price as well

I've been doing surf practice closer to home (I'm in Marin) so I think I'll pass on going all the way to Monterey. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. Next time….

I too am currently leaning towards doing something else on Sun…such a long drive to Monterey for us in city/North/East Bay (2 hours) … maybe one of us should host an event closer to us (like Oakland/Alameda or Pt. Reyes!). Hope to so any of you at another KA event!

Alas, I am in the throws of preparing for kids and grandkids. So much work! See you soon.

Such a good idea! (I've been reading about some of the beginner routes in the Monterey vicinity in Schumann's "Sea Kayaking: Central and Nor Cal." Maybe next time for me!

Anyone going from Berkeley or nearby?

I have a shift that starts at 4 pm. Would it be ok if I left at around 12? I will most likely bring my own gear!

    June 19, 2014

    • Jenny S.

Of course! The great thing about this event is that since we're focused on practice, we won't be too far from the launch point throughout the day. I've also found the practicing can be tiring, so people can head in whenever they need.

I was really looking forward to this (even bought a new bilge pump and paddle holder in the last few days) but this is becoming a very tiring work week. I'm gonna have to retract my YES, just to let you know well ahead of time. If I change my mind, I'll be sure to let you know. Sorry, everyone! Hope you have a great time!

Thanks for letting us know, hope you get some rest this weekend! Also hope to see you soon at another paddle!

Just checking, is this arrive at 10 or in water at 10? Makes a difference for us slow-pokes :-)

    June 18, 2014

    • Jenny S.

Good point, on the water at 10. There's a soccer match that will be driving my "off the water time" to be earlier than usual. :)

If you're practicing in the surf, bring a helmet.

    2 · May 29, 2014

    • Liz

MBK also has helmets in their rental gear. I have no idea if they rent these alone w/o other gear.

      May 29, 2014

    • Jenny S.

Given MBK, I'd guess they'll rent out helmets for a nominal fee, unless they have a class at the same time which requires helmets.

Does re-entry practice mean team and self rescue?

    May 28, 2014

    • Liz

I think it would be useful for us sit-on-topers to learn how we can help a sit-insider reenter their kayak, if they need help.

      May 29, 2014

    • John M.

Back atcha, Liz. I have practice helping another sit-insider reenter their kayak, and I'd like to work out a way to smoothly help a sit-on-topper.

I don't think my Necky 11 footer will do a roll (note how I blame the kayak and not me), and I also don't own a conventional spray skirt. Still, if the object is safety if one tips over, practicing any method sounds like a great idea. Thank you to Jenny for organizing this paddle!

    May 28, 2014

    • John M.

If anyone can make that thing roll, you can do it, Mark. Otherwise, we're happy to work with you on a buddy rescue (or cheer you on to a self-rescue).

If I'm in town I'll be there.
