Estero Americano

  • Dinucci's Italian Dinners

14485 Valley Ford Road, Valley Ford, CA (map)

  • This paddle starts as not much more then a creek by a bridge that then runs through farmland and pastures for six miles until it empties out into Bodega Bay. We can stop for lunch at the sand flats. Distance: 12 miles

This is a fall paddle so bringing extra layers will be important. Also, come with usual equipment, (PFD, paddle float etc.) as we would on any other event. Also take into account that this is a fairly long paddle.

Parking is available and the directions are the following: Hwy 101 to Petaluma, take East Washington St. exit, follow signs to Bodega Bay, Washington turns into Bodega Ave then Hwy 1, In Valley Ford take left at Dinucci’s Italian Restaurant onto Valley Ford Estero Road. Cross the bridge and make the next left onto Marsh Road and then an immediate left onto a semi-paved road to the put in point. [masked],[masked]) for you GPS types.

Finally, there are no rentals close by this launch site. The only shop in the area is in Petaluma at: Clavey Kayaks 409 Petaluma Blvd S Ste A, Petaluma, CA 94952 (707)[masked]

John; I've not been designated as the owner of this paddle. However, there are at least 5-6 who still plan to paddle this on Saturday. Two are camping in the area and others will be coming from Sac (I won't be attending). They plan to be on the water soon after 9am. Wind predicted to be 12-23mph and the group paddling plans to paddle at 3mph. If you're still game, please join them. Thanks!

~John; one more comment on this..the group is meeting at the Put-in, not at the resturaunt listed. As soon as you cross the bridge, make a left and another left onto a dirt road.

John, my regrets. I had wanted to do this badly, but I'm booked down here and can't take out the day. Next time.

I'm going to have to pull out of this due to a back injury...hopefully we can do this one again. Maybe in the spring?

Sac Paddle Pushers is doing this on 11/17. We should be on the water by 9:30 as the tide will be at 3.5 ft, rising to 6ft by noon. Tide will drop back to 3ft by 4pm. We should be out of the water by this time.

I decided to not go this time... since in the last 3 hours ,3 more have dropped out. I was really looking forward to this. Hopefully, it will be rescheduled! See you then.

Hi everyone, I am afraid I am going to have to bow out of this event. I would like to know if someone would take over as the lead or should I re-schedule?

An update. This paddle is approximately 5.5 to 6 miles one way. The idea is to do a round trip, making this a longer paddle then usual. (Elkhorn for example to and from Kirby Park is +/- 9 miles). That is not to say that as a group we can turn around when we feel it is time. I think this paddle will be very dependent on the weather. Both folks who have experience at this location, emphasized the wind (and the mud). If it is clear and little to no wind we should be good. If not, we cancel and reschedule.

Still wondering if anyone has paddled this before and can share the experience. Right now, 12 miles is seeming long, but perhaps this is mitigated by fairly flat water and lack of wind through the first 6 miles? Thank you for any info.!

This was a cold windy and muddy paddle. Low tides can leave you stuck in the mud. But it was one of the most beautiful and secluded

@MAG; my paddle group went out here at the end of April. It was the most difficult paddle I've personally been on, but very beautiful. Shallow spots can leave you stuck if not careful and if the tide isn't at least 2ft. Winds both out and back can be upwards of 35mph. The area is seasonal, however, and the group could be met with zero wind. We'll be doing this again in November. When there isn't any wind, I hear you can see both bat rays and tiger sharks..very cool!

I signed up a long time ago for this...still planning on going. Any more info?

Anything new on this one? Do we have a vehicle-at-the-other-end plan yet?

Would appreciate any advise on difficulty--12 miles is long for me, but if winds not too bad and water mostly flat on the way out, I think I could make it. Any comments very appreciated! Dave--yer a definite no for this? Thanks everyone!

So it sounds like setting up a car at the end would be important, is that right? How does this usually work?

Hi Jerry; my paddle group did this at the end of April. Winds were very strong on paddle out, but well worth the long paddle to make it to the ocean. Would recommend those attending be capable of paddling for this distance in strong wind conditions and small white caps. We had to re-route the group at one point due to low water levels as some bottomed out. Enjoy!

Hi! I would like to come on some of these paddles but don't have a kayak. I know Clavey's in P'town and can rent there but-can I just put the kayak on top of my car on top of pads and tie it down, or do I need a roof rack? Thx for advice!

Having had communications from those that are more familiar with this area, I am going to push this paddle back in the calendar. This waterway requires a minimum of 2' at all times and the date we currently have scheduled is just barely at that minimum. I will consult the tide charts and reschedule accordingly.

I am with Sven. I will monitor the weather and as we approach this date we can make the call on the weather.
