Elkhorn Slough Paddle

Elkhorn Slough is one of the best places to kayak on the planet! Marine mammals, birds, and natural beauty abound.

Be on the beach in front of Monterey Bay Kayaks at 10am READY TO LAUNCH. After a 2-minute briefing we will head out for a leisurely paddle up the slough to a point just past Seal Bend. There we will either pause for lunch, or--if the group so desires--enter the funhouse maze of Rubis Creek for lunch and possible Coast Guard rescue (just kidding).

We'll ride the tide both directions, but if the afternoon winds kick up the paddle back could become an effort. This is an excellent paddle for beginners or experienced kayakers. If you don't own your own kayak you can rent from Monterey Bay Kayaks. It's best to reserve a kayak in advance as they do sell out on nice days. www.montereybaykayaks.com or[masked]-5357. If you are going to rent, please show up at MBK by 9:15am. If you are an absolute beginner, I recommend a sit-on-top kayak, and polyester underclothes. MBK will provide you with a wetsuit, PFD, paddle, and paddle jacket as part of their rental package. A wetsuit is always a good idea when paddling in cold water.

NOTE: We will not wait for stragglers. Please show the group the courtesy of being there on time ready to go. There will be experienced paddlers in this group, or the always friendly and knowledgeable staff of MBK, to help you out.

If you have a marine VHF transceiver, we will be on channel 72.

There is a fee for parking in the Moss Landing Harbor Parking Lot.  Get an envelope from the rusty kiosk on the bathroom building, and deposit your parking fee there as well.  Note that you need only pay for parking, not launching, as we will not be using the launch ramp.

Thanks Eric for calling this paddle. Enjoyed the company! Can't ask for better conditions! A little write-up...

Perhaps the nicest weather I've seen on the slough. Sunny and mild (one member "fell" out of her kayak--twice--and enjoyed the cooling off); very light winds in the morning; light crosswinds in the afternoon; tides with us all day. Lots of birds and marine mammals out and about. A friendly group that enjoyed being out in nature. Thanks for organizing this, Eric.

Latest NWS forecast: Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 70. Light and variable wind becoming west northwest 8 to 13 mph in the afternoon. So, moderate breeze from the right front on the way back.

I am partial to Whole Enchilada or Haute Enchilada, more choices for vegetarians :-)

Sea Harvest is a good choice, too, if you're not into big.

I was told that even while volunteering for the sanctuary I had to pay the parking fee. But ymmv.

It is our normal launching place. And call me an anarchist, but I've never paid for parking there. I heard of one person given a warning, and I think that was during salmon fishing season.

IF this is the usual Elkhorn Slough launching place, I'm wondering about the parking fee--I've never noticed it before. Do I need quarters or will dollars work out... Thank you, Eric (and ty, John, for weather forecast!)

Forecast looks good: morning overcast clearing; excellent tides (low @ 0744, high @ 1314, with over a 4-1/2' drop in the afternoon); hope for winds as predicted (from N-NNE @ 5-10 kts., so wind and tides behind us coming home); about 59 degrees in the water. Nice.
