Kayak and Cleanup Alviso Slough, Coastal Cleanup Day

  • We'll paddle up Alviso Slough on a 10 ft+ tide possibly as as far as 3-4 miles, depending on conditions, for Coastal Cleanup Day 2013. We'll paddle by the South Bay Yacht Club, the flood control gates, and watch the environment turn from saltwater slough to fresh water river. There are often lots of birds to see--one year we were visited by a golden eagle. We may even get a glimpse of the slough's elusive beavers. Once we've gone far enough we'll stop for a snack and wait for the tide to turn. We'll be riding the tide both ways.

www.sloughkeepers.org will provide garbage bags, and kayak barges for hauling out trash. If we can raise enough money before the paddle, we may even provide lunch and perhaps even a prize for the biggest trash haul--but at this point this is TBD.

This is a chance to paddle an interesting environment, and is good for all levels of kayakers, even beginners. There are no rentals nearby, so you'll have to bring your own kayak or arrange for a drive-away rental.

The new Alviso Marina is a great place to launch from with both high and low docks, a boat ramp, and bathroom facilities in the lower parking lot. The launching facilities are in the upper parking lot.

Please arrive early and be on the water by 1:30pm. The current on these Fall tides is substantial, so the launch time depends on being able to ride the tide both ways.

This is a chance for all kayakers to give a little something back to the waterways we all enjoy so much.

There are often clumps of reeds that jam up in parts of the slough. In the past we have nearly always been able to bust through these clumps, but sometimes it is a little work, and there is the slight chance we will not get as far as we would like. But it is very slight. I am offering this in the interest of full disclosure.

NOAA reports rain likely, slight chance of thunderstorms. Weather Underground and the Weather Channel are showing increased likelihood of rain with possible embedded thunderstorms. As much as I hate to do this, I think the prudent thing to do is CANCEL for today. I will look at the tide charts and RESCHEDULE within a day or two. We need a really high tide to make this work. Sorry everybody.

It's overcast here in Scotts Valley and the trees are wet, but it's not actively raining. We'll assume it's still a "go" unless we see a cancellation soon.

A 20% chance of rain is forecast. These are usually conservative--I don't think I have ever seen rain with a 20% chance forecast, and looking at the weather map it looks like the system will pass to the North. We are a go unless it is raining by 11am. You can call me for an update at[masked] tomorrow morning if you want, but I think the weather will be fine. It can get hot on Alviso Slough, so some clouds are nothing but good. See you tomorrow!

Sorry, thought I'd be further along in moving. My truck is loaded with belongings and unuseable for kayak transport.

Besides our paddle gear, what do we need to bring to assist in the cleanup?

Regrets. We're in a cash crunch at our public radio station, and I'll be calling major donors Saturday (and other days) and asking for their support.

I'm sorry for your loss, Kelly. Each of us has his/her own way of dealing with grief, so good on ya' for following your own counsel. We'll be happy to see you, if/when you decide it's time to be out and about.

One of the employees at the Refuge would like to join us. Does anyone have a spare seat in a kayak or a kayak they can borrow?

I'm really looking forward to this, both to see the slough especially after Eric's presentation, but also to help clean up. I've been surprised how much small trash I've seen in the Montery Bay, even at Point Lobos, and in the creek that runs past my house. It's a shame our waterways are all so polluted with trash.
