Cool Katrina.  They are the best, huh?  Hopefully we can meet on one of these outings.  It would be great to meet you as we already have one thing in common.  :)

It depends on what kind of kayak you want.  I have a Wilderness System sit on top kayak...that is 10 ft.  I love it.  If you haven't checked out Adventure Sports in Sacramento, you might want to start there.  They sometimes have previous rentals on sale for like half the price.  Plus they have a HUGE warehouse full of kayaks, PFD's and paddles, plus kayak racks.  I was really impressed with their staff, too.  I had my $250 paddle stolen out of the trunk of my car 2 yrs. ago on Halloween and had to buy another one.  They have lay away there so it made the pain seem sooo much less when it came to buying it....AGAIN..lol.  Anyways...hope this helped.

Subject: [bay-areakayakers] Would Like Kayak and Related Equipment Recommendations

Hi Everyone,

I'm about to decide on a kayak purchase (and related equipment). I am a newbie, although not an absolute beginner, and I imagine paddling this on inland lakes, sloughs, the S.F. Bay, and protected coastal areas for no more than a half-day excursion or so.

I was thinking about a kayak between 9.5 and 12 feet (and about $600 to $800).  I've been eyeing REI's 10.5 foot Necky Manitou and am also considering used kayaks. (Also, I prefer a kayak without a fairly large/wide cockpit area, e.g., a lot of the Old Town kayaks I've seen).

Any recommendations/experiences (not only on kayaks but paddles, PFD's, other necessities) would be very appreciated, and might be useful to others considering a purchase.  Thank you to Jery and Kevin for their rack tips, and thank you in advance to anyone replying to this post.

I rented a tandem hard shell kayak in Hawaii and they just used pool noodles with the winching straps you can get at Walmart.  I saw some shops use four total noodles, two in the front and two in the back.  My shop just used one in the front and one in the back. It was just a few miles to the sea and there were no freeway involved.

Here's a picture of it:

Just like the one Jerry mentioned, the straps go through the inside of the car. It is nice if you have an SUV with plenty of headroom.  If you have a car with a lower ceiling, the straps might be a bit annoying since it will be near the the top of your head.
